The two countries informed UN Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar of the change in their position. Only four of the 17 former members of the defunct War Crimes Commis sion still oppose opening the files. They are France, Poland, Czechoslovakia and India. Belgium, China, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Norway joined Israel’s request. It had been supported earlier by the U.S., Australia, Denmark, Greece, The Netherlands and Yugoslavia. Israeli diplomats have noted that while a majority of the former members favors mak ing the files public, final authority rests with the Secretary General. An archive containing 40,000 files on war criminals is stored in a building in midtown Manhat tan. Israel has already in spected several thousand files. UN regulations allow member states to do this on a confiden tial basis. Sing for Interfaith Unity JERUSALEM (JTA) — Liturgical music was proposed by a Dominican monk as a means to promote unity, understanding and peace bet ween the different faiths in Jerusalem. Fatho* Marcel DuBois, head of the Philosophy Department of the Hebrew University, spoke at the 40th annual con vention of the Cantors Assembly here. DuBois, a member of the Vatican’s Com mission on Jews, said every person of good faith, whether Jewish, Christian or Moslem, listens to music. “Every one of us sings according to our own OWNED BY GARY & MAXINE SILVERSTEIN melody, but when we sing together, it is not a cacophony. We are singing the same music to Jerusalem,” DuBois said. He described Jerusalem as “a laboratory of tolerance” where Jews, Christians and Moslems of every denomina tion are trying to live together.” He thought the division of the churches bet ween the eastern and western parts of the city was a “scandal”. DuBois, a Jerusalem resi dent since 1962, said more Christians than ever were coming to Jerusalem to read the Bible with Jewish friends to “discover the significance of Jewish history.” Idaho Terror Act Is Challenge To White Racist Violence NEW YORK (JTA) - A new Terrorist Training Act — barring training for violent crimes or the use of any means capable of causing property damage, bodily harm or death — may make Idaho the most uncompromising state in the country regarding hate crimes. Violators of the law, which took effect July 1, can receive up to 10 years’ im prisonment and a $50,000 fine. Attorney General Jim Jones called the new act “the toughest, most comprehensive legislation of its kind in the U.S., and it wiU be strictly en forced. White supremacists and would-be terrorists who want to conduct training to hurt people had best do it out side the borders of Idaho.” The passage followed a series of violent crimes com mitted in recent years in the northern Idaho mountain town of Coeur d’Alene. The suspected perpetrators were members of the Aryan Nations-Church of Jesus Christ Christian, a neo-Nazi, violently anti-Semitic, anti- Black group that ascribes to the Christian Identity ide ology and whose headquarters are in nearby Hayden Lake, Idaho. CJF Launches Teleconference Network NEW YORK (JTA) - The Council of Jewish Federations (CJF) introduced this summer a two-way satellite telecon ferencing network intended to enhance communication bet ween federations, between CJF and federations and bet ween CJF and its lay leader ship. CJF is the association of more than 200 North Ameri can Jewish federations. The new network could also be used by other organizations, including United Jewish Ap peal, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and United Way. Nineteen federations have agreed to participate. To join the network, a federation must pay a one time fee of $2,500, which in cludes the satellite dish, in stallation, wiring, labor and the initial year’s service and maintenance. To participate in a session — viewing and making com ments — each network mem ber wiU pay $200 per hour, or $500 per hour when the pro gram originates overseas. All participants can hear the remarks of the others. He already holds the world record as most prolific painter of saleable art with upwards of 162,000 paintings in his 41- year career, and a speed record with his 16-by-25-inch canvas of a skier, created in 43 seconds at the Limelight Nightclub in Chicago. Katz, born in Poland in 1932, escaped the Nazis more than 12 times. Living in a displaced person’s camp after the war the 13-year-old Katz began art lessons with a former teacher from the War saw Academy. He then ap prenticed at the Munich Academy of Art, paid for by his mother with a handful of chocolates. He came to the U.S. in 1949. At least a few weeks a year, Katz commutes to Jerusalem which he said adds to his “spiritual uplifting.” Between America and Israel, Katz reportedly has raised some $1 million for charitable organizations. Austrian Press Shows Anti-Semitic Statements NEW YORK (JTA) - Numerous anti-Semitic state ments have surfaced in the Austrian press along with strong criticism barring Kurt Waldheim. * Anti-Semitic comments appeared in more than a fifth of the articles dealing with Waldheim. Among them: “Jewish wirepullers,” “Jewish greediness,” “Jewish man hunt” and “Jewish imperti nence.” ♦ Austria’s largest circula tion daily, Neue Kronen ZeituDg, made anti-Semitic references in more than a third of its stories. * The press service of the Christian-Conservative Party (OVP) suggested “Jewish backers” or “a worldwide con spiracy” were behind the American action against Waldheim. Waldheim’s alleged com plicity in Nazi atrocities when he served as a Wehrmacht in telligence officer in the Balkans during World War II had kept him isolated diplo matically since his election a year ago. His visit to the Pope caused worldwide consterna tion among Jews smd non- Jews alike. He is officially barred from admission into the United States, and so far no Western European country has invited him. Of the Eastern bloc, only Hungary has extended an invitation. However, Egypt, Libya, Uganda and Iraq have in dicated he would be welcome. On June 30, the Foreign Minister of Iran, Ali Akbar Velayati, extended a second invitation on behalf of his country. Robertson Forsees Strong Jewish Support WASHINGTON (JTA) - The Rev. Marion “Pat” Robertson, the TV evangelist who probably will seek the Republican nomination for the Presidency, said recently that he expects to have support in the Jewish conmiunity. “I would anticipate, especially among Conser vative and Orthodox Jews, I would have a tremendous body of support,” Robertson said at a National Press Club luncheon. “I’m counting on it from everything I've seen.” His remarks were made in response to a question on whether he was seeking sup- See WORLD BEAT next page CAROLINA MARKING DEVICES, INC. 516 S.
