Protests Given of Jerusalem's Exclusion from World Conclave Hosted by Kyoto NEW YORK (JTA) - The Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith has protested the exclusion of the city of Jerusalem from the forthcom ing World Conference of Historical Cities to be hosted by the city of Kyoto. The conference, scheduled in November, will be represented by 35 cities. The Kyoto City Council voted not to extend an invitation to Jerusalem. ADL first raised the matter of Jerusalem’s exclusion with the Japanese Embassy in Wash- in^on last May. The Em bassy informed ADL that the decision stiU stands. The city of Kyoto wanted “to make it clear” that its decision does not reflect any “racial or religious bias.” Such cities as Fez, Baghdad, Tunis, Quebec and Cuzco asked to attend and were re jected. Among the 35 cities in vited were Alexandria, Egypt, and Damascus, Syria. The only U.S. city invited was Boston. • WASHINGTON (JTA) - Sixty House members have signed a letter to Nobuo Mat- sunaga, Japanese Ambassa dor to the U.S., urging that Jerusalem be invited to send representatives to Kyoto. “Any conference on the im pact of the major cities of the world on the Wstory of man kind would be noticeably in complete without a discussion of the historical contributions of the city of Jerusalem,” the Congressmen stressed in the letter initiated by Reps. Mel Levine and Robert Matsui (both D. Calif.). “In this case, such an omission is to blatant and unjustified that it raises concerns of political bias and prejudice,” the letter said. Tid-Bits TEL AVIV (JTA) - The Arab League boycott of Israel is as old as the State, but unlabelled Israeli export goods are^. reaching, Arab countries. Israeli plants are sending pro ducts to Saudi Arabia, the Persian Gulf states and Jor dan. Polgat and Triumph com panies and many others are also exporting foodstuffs and household items. The latter are exported without Hebrew labels; the food exports carry Arabic labels. Jordan TV broadcasts com mercials produced in Israel. • TEL AVIV (JTA) - Israel has no peace treaty with Jor dan and is technically in a state of war with other Arab countries. But this does not prevent nationals of those countries from visiting Israel and enjoying the amenities of fered tourists from anywhere RENEE STEINER/REALTOR Merrill Lynch Realty Office — 364-1580 Home — 366-8044 **seryicing clients in the most professional way possible** il5\S15151Sl5lSl5l5lSl5lSl51SM5l5lSlSlSlSl5l5lSlSl5l5l51Sl5l5lSl^ Imperial printino products Specialists In Raised Printing Stationery — Business Cards Wedding ~ Bar Mitzvah Invitations Business & Social Announcements in the world. Senior Jordanian officials who come to the administered territories, in connection with King Hussein’s five-year plan to improve Palestinian living conditions, often visit Tel Aviv and other parts of Israel. Tens of thousands of visitors from other Arab countries combine visits to relatives in the territories with sightsee ing and shopping in Israel. • BUDAPEST (JTA) - A Center of Jewish Studies, the first in an Eastern bloc coun try, was dedicated at the Hungarian Academy of Sci ences, under whose auspices it will operate. The ceremony was the highlight of the ex ecutive committee meeting here of the Memorial Founda tion for Jewish Culture, which initiated and funded the Center, which will assemble and organize archival material dealing with Hungarian Jewry. It will document Jewish historical, literary, religious, folkloric and social life. • NEW YORK (JTA) - An elderly German-born Jewish philosopher who has taught at the Hebrew University, in Canada and the U.S., has been awarded the 1987 German Booksellers Association Prize. NEW YORK (JTA) - The City Council has voted unanimously to endorse legislation which is pending in both houses of Congress designed to close PLO offices in New York and Washington. It called for official classifica tion of the PLO as a terrorist organization which is commit ted to acts of terrorism against the U.S. and is com mitted to the destruction of Israel. • JERUSALEM (JTA) - An Ethiopisin couple appealed to the Supreme Court against the refusal by the Rabbinical Court to register them as Jews unless they undergo a special conversion process, including ritual immersion. This has been a sore point, especiaUy since the arrival in Israel of about 10,000 Ethio pian Jews in “Operation Moses” in 1985. The Rab binate has expressed doubts in many cases of their authentici ty as Jews. The Ethiopians, fiercely devout and observant of all religious laws, consider the demand for conversion a gross insult since it is not re quired of Jewish immigrants from other countries. • NEW YORK (JTA) - Luis Yanez, Spedn’s Secretary of State for International Cooperation, stated that his government plans to stress the contribution of Spanish Jews to the discovery of America in the course of the quincentennial celebrations of the event in 1992.
