The movie, starring Streisand and featuring her music, is based on Tom Topor’s stage production, which ran for a year in Los Angeles and on Broadway. It is a courtroom drama in which Streisand plays the most provocative role in her career — a strong-willed woman who refused to plead mental incompetence in a criminal case although it would get her off the hook. She stars with Richard Dreyfuss, a fellow Oscar- winner who plays the public defender. They £ire joined by Academy Award-winner Mau reen Stapleton as Streisand’s mother, Tony Award-winner Eli Wallach as the hospital psychiatrist, Robert Webber as the prosecuting attorney, Oscar nominee James Whit more as the judge and Academy Award-winner Karl Malden as Streisand’s step father. • • • Speilberg has finished the filming of the first American motion picture ever shot in China and his first movie since 1985’s “The Color Purple”. It is “Empire of the Sun”, the ac count of a boy separated by his parents and imprisoned in Shanghai by Japanese in vaders during World War II. It is based on the best selling novel by science fiction writer J.G. Ballard, drawing on a personal episode. The screenplay is by playwright Tom Stoppard and Menno Meyjes, known for his work on “The Color Purple’'. Christian Bale portrays the boy, while John Malkovich stars as an American mer chant seaman captured by the Japanese and thrown into a prison camp with the boy. Nigel Havers plays the doctor who struggles to prevent his fellow prisoners from dying. • • • Producer Menahem Golan has finished in Hungary most of the cinematography for the film on Jewish hero Hannah Sennesh.
