Holiday Baskets HaLailah brightened Rosh Hashanah for 29 families in the Charlotte community. Decorative baskets were filled with wine, apples, honey, candles and home-made chal- lahs (thanks to Penny Eisen- berg). With the help of Jewish Family Services, the baskets were delivered to our elderly, shut-ins and needy. Many thanks to Meredith Glazer and her committee. Personal Giving Our 1987 Personal Giving Campaign was held Sept. 1 and was a tremendous suc cess. Members and guests were treated to an elegant buf fet of hors d'oeuvres and desserts. Irma Gertler, BBW’s International President, spoke about the Children's Home in Israel which is sponsored by BBW, and her recent trip to the Soviet Union. Ms. Gertler, who took the trip with a con tingency of Congressional wives, described her meetings with two groups of Refuse niks. It was an emotional experience. Special Projects On Sept. 26, the Jewish community was represented at UNCC’s International Festival. Thanks go to HaLailah and the JCC who cosponsored a booth. Par ticipants at the festival re ceived accurate information about our cultural heritage and were able to examine items important to our reli gion. • The Great Pumpkin Festival, held on Oct. 31 in conjunction with The Char lotte Chamber of Commerce, was a tremendous success. Many thanks to Wendy Rosen and Maddie Joffe for cochair- ing the committee for volun teers; to Geri Zhiss, who cochaired the Public Relations committee, and to the 40 HaLailah volunteers whose hard work helped hundreds of children celebrate a safe and happy Halloween. As a fund raising project, HaLailah will sponsor a book fair in early December. In con junction with the book fair, we are selling a Chanukah book, The Magic Dreidel. This book is part of our “create a book series" in which each book is personalized for a particular child, relating the Chanukah story to that child. The book makes an excellent gift for your child or a friend. For details call Kaye Yaffe, 541-3144 or Lauren Lassman, 846-3310.
