Africa in Barter Deal TEL AVIV (JTA) - Israel has entered a barter deal with South Africa to exchange non military aircraft for coal. Israel Radio said a South African coal mine would receive Astra executive jet planes manufactured by Israel Aircraft Industries (lAI). The barter arrangement in no way contravenes the Inner Cabinet’s decision of Sept. 16 to drastically curtail trade with South Africa and impose other sanctions against the apartheid regime. About 250,000 tons of South African coal will be sold by the Israel National Coal Corp. to the Israel Electric Corp. The $7 million paid for the coal will be debited to the South African mine and credited to lAI. This was not a “new sale to South Africa” but a new form of bsirter pay ment for the continuation of existing contracts for South African coal. A similar Astra jets-for-coal deal is being negotiated with an Australian mine. Israel and Hungary Sigrn Accord GENEVA (JTA) - Israel and Hungary signed an agree ment in Bern to establish in terest sections in their respec tive countries. It is the lowest level of ciiplomatic representa tion but could be a precursor to stronger ties in the future. Hungary has followed the footsteps of Poland which established an interests sec tion in Tel Aviv earlier this year. Israel simultaneously set up an interests section in War saw. Apart from Rumania, they are the only Communist- bloc countries to reestablish any form of diplomatic rela tions with Israel since they severed ties during the 1967 Six-Day War. Rumania alone never broke with Israel and the two countries maintain full diplomatic relations on the ambassadorial level. Israel and USSR in Joint Venture JERUSALEM (JTA) - A joint Israeli-Soviet commercial film venture is in the making. If negotiations which took place here are successful, shooting will begin in the USSR next April and later in Israel. George Daniela, a leading Soviet director, and Russian screenwriter Revaz Gabeiadz were in Israel to finedize a deal with Menahem Golem, head of Cannon Films, a company owned by Israelis that has produced major films for inter national markets. Golan originated the idea of a comedy in English and Rus sian which attracted the atten tion of the two Soviet film makers, neither of whom is Jewish. The plot concerns a non-Jew from the Soviet Georgian Republic who, hear ing about Israel from Jewish compatriots, decides to pose as a Jew and try it for himself. The production will be co produced with Cannon Films and Golan-Globus Israel Studios in Jerusalem. About a third will be shot in the USSR, possibly in Georgia, and the rest in Israel. Foreign Ministers of Israel and Turkey To Meet for First Time UNITED NATIONS (JTA) — An unprecedented meeting between the Foreign Ministers of Israel and Turkey will be held in New York. In the view of diplomats here, the meeting between the two officials is likely to create a breakthrough in Turkish-Israeli relations. Turkey, a Moslem country, does not have full diplomatic ties with Israel. The two coun tries only have consular level representations between them. The Turkish media reported that Ankara has agreed that some 30,000 Iremian Jews will go to Israel from Iran through Turkey. According to those reports, negotiations between the Turkish government and Iranian and Israeli officials have been taking place regard ing the emigration of Iranian Jews. Furthermore, the Turk ish media claimed that a high level Iranian diplomat flew secretly from Turkey to Israel recently and met with govern ment offici£ils in Israel on the subject. Neo-Nazi Elected to Bremen Parliament BONN (JTA) — A candidate of a neo-Nazi party won a seat in the Parliament of the federal state of Bremen in northern Germany, to the sur prise and consternation of liberals and conservatives alike. Hans Alterman, a rightwing extremist, repre sented the Deutsche Volksu- nion (DVU), a party headed by neo-Nazi Gerhard Frey. Kansas City Agency Has Babies For Adoption by Jewish Couples KANSAS CITY (JTA) - An agency affiliated with the Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) here announces the availability of infemts for adoption by childless Kansas and Missouri Jewish couples or those with one child. The Adams Center, a non profit, non-sectarian advocacy agency for women with pregnancy-related problems, was founded in 1985. In 1986, it merged with a program run by the JFCS to provide counseling for women of all religions. The adoptable infants are given up by mothers who have come to the center for counsel ing. Center director Patti Glass said the option of abor tion rarely comes up in coun seling because the clients are well into their pregnancies. For more information, call (816) 444-4545. Fire Guts Boston*s Hadassah Thrift Shop BOSTON (JTA)-Thelocal Hadassah chapter sought a temporary alternative location for its Thrift Shop, which was gutted by a four-fdarm fire ear ly on Sept. 4. The store will be rebuilt on its original site within nine months, according to chapter president Rachel Albert. The shop sustained an esti mated $200,000 worth of damage, double that when adding the value of its con tents. The 10,155 square foot store was Hadassah’s largest grossing thrift shop in the country, according to the Jewish Advocate, taking in $350,000 annually from the sale of donated items. The fire affected a block, and busied 115 firefighters using 23 pieces of apparatus for four hours. Businesses and Boycott Laws (Near East Report) — Safeway Stores Inc., in deny ing Commerce Department charges that it repeatedly violated U.S. anti-boycott laws (NER, Aug. 10), insisted that it does business with Israel. A spokeswoman noted that Safeway’s own private label. Town House canned grapefruit, is Israeli-packed and that geographic divisions within Safeway purchase their own products from Israel in cluding Telma mixes. Elite candy and Yehuda matzo and wine.
