Page S^^THE NEWS-Deceniber, 1987 mm In And Around The JCC sll Vour-OoAars Wor*« Mer-e Activities Join the Chai-Lites on Mon days from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. for discussion groups and lectures on various topics, ex ercise classes, the Golden Age Walking Club £ind a lot of com- araderie. On Tuesdays, attend the Luncheon Club once a month, take a field trip and at tend a Senior Day which is sponsored by the Charlotte Chapter BBW. On Wednes days, volunteer at the Speiz- man Shalom Park Jewish Library. Help the Chai-Lites assist in preparing for and celebrating Shabbat with the Jewish Day School students on Fridays. Enjoy monthly brunches, films, birthday par ties and cultural events. Transportation is available for all programs and activities. In October, Chai raffle tickets were mailed. Several special items are being offered: a mat ted water color by one of our members, Annie Shapiro; an acrylic painting, by another member, Annie Goldberg; an afghan crocheted by Kay El len Mordsky, daughter of Chai-Lites members Sam and Naomi Lansky. G.G. Kosch will also be donating one of her handmade raku ceramic pins and matching pierced ear rings. In addition, two twenty- five dollar gift certificates from Yours TVuly Needlepoint are being raffled. The drawing has been postponed from November 9 to December 21. Your contribution would be more than appreciated since this is our major fundraiser for the year. The funds for this raffle support our programs for the senior citizens. Senior Health Clinic Community Health Ser vices, a United Way agency, will sponsor a health clinic for persons over 55 at the J on Wednesday, January 20 from 10 a.m. until noon. Blood pressure and pulse will be checked in addition to a urinalysis. There is a one time $5 charge for four clinics throughout the year. Pick-A'Card On Wednesday evenings, from 7:30 p.m. on, come and join other card mavens in the Chai lounge for some of your favorite games: bridge, gin rummy, canasta, pinochle, mahjongg...any game is pos sible. This group enjoys cards, games and lively conversation with convivial people — cou ples, singles, working or re tired. A little coffee, a little nosh, a lot of fun...please feel free to dop in. Call Jane Abel at the J for further informa tion. Book Review On Sunday, January 10, The Senior Adult Department at the JCC is sponsoring a book Chai-Lites review for anyone interested. Hammer: The Autobiogra phy of Dr. Armand Hammer and Gone to Soldiers by Marge Piercy will be reviewed by Gladys Lavitan. Mrs. Lavi- tan, a professioned actress who also does radio, television and movie commercials, has re viewed books for the past thir ty years. Barbara Walters says “Ar mand Hammer is a man who could call Lenin by his first name, who is as familiar with a Picasso as he is with a Presi dent and whose life was and continues to be a wondrous journey.” Gone to Soldiers is an epic of World War II in volving Jewish children caught in the holocaust. Please join us at 7 p.m. for a stimulating discussion and then enjoy a delicious array of assorted desserts with coffee. The charge for the evening is $2 per person. Visit a different country each month. Join Bill Burton the first Monday of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. as he makes these presentations, and then stay for coffee and cake. Mr. Burton is the former Vice-President of Corporate Com munications at Duke Power. He spent his entire 45 year career at this company. Since his retirement he has traveled exten sively with his wife and has visited most of the continents. He now presents slide shows and talks to retirement homes. The occasion will be the fourth biennial North American Mac- cabi Youth Games, August 18-25, 1988. For many of these future world leaders, it will be the most formative week of their lives, an opportunity to share with others a dramatic rite of passage in a spirit of cama raderie and peace. For some, it wiU be the most crucial step along the path to athletic ex cellence, to the world class Maccabiah or to the Olympics. But for all, it wiU be total im mersion in a positive unforget table life shaping experience. Not all can win...but all will excel. During the coming weeks and months, the stage for this historic event will be set. Many elements itre already in place. The athletic events will occur in North Shore Chica go’s finest sports facilities, and the full schedule of com petition in 12 different sports categories will be augmented by memorably rich, full cul tural events showcasing the best Chicago has to offer. Athletes, ages 13 to 16- years-old, will participate in 12 different competitions: basket ball, gynmastics, martial arts, racquetball, soccer, softbedl, squash, swimming, table ten nis, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.
