Page 6-THE NEWS-December, 1987 Charlotte Jewish Day School Who Disciplines — You or Them? By Berta Straz On Wednesday, November 4, at Shalom Park, we held a community outreach program for all young parents. Elaine Cigler led the morning seminar which started at 9:15 a.m. Elaine has worked diligently in the field of child develop ment for the past 22 years. As a social worker, both here in the United States and in South Africa, she has worked with families dealing with pro blems in discipline and posi tive growth through disci pline. Elaine was in private practice for many years, and associated herself with Jewish Day Schools, both here and abroad. She spoke about effective ways in raising responsible children. The authoritarian ap proach was discussed; letting children take their own actions was discussed; hitting, screaming, punching, are there alternatives; if so, what are they? Many topics were touched upon. The key being misbeha vior. What is reasonable? What is realistic? What is ap propriate with children? She said that children misbehave because it works. They go through stages and ages. As a famous philosopher said: “Don’t aim to be perfect, aim to be good enough”! Elaine gave an interesting anedogy by saying “Half of the people were setting up chairs in the front of a boat, and those peo ple were looking ahead to the future, and half of the people Elaine Cigler answering special concerns of individual mothers. m Parents listening and absorbing as were setting up chairs in the back of the boat and they were seeing the past, and when called upon, as to how he, Charlie Brown, planned on set ting up his chairs, he said, “ I don’t even know how to unfold them.” This story appUes to the approach in rearing child ren too. The morning ended with a lively question and answer period which was then fol- much Information as possible. photos/B. Straz lowed by a repast of bagels and a variety of cream cheese spreads. Babysitting was also available at no charge. We were delighted to host such a wonderful seminar which was in conjunction with Temple Israel Pre-School and Mother’s Morning Out. It was nice to see 75 eager young parents who came out of con cern and special interests. So, who disciplines, you or them? Teaching thinking skills and encourag ing creativity are top priorities in the minds of many of to day’s educators. A highly motivational way to en courage growth in this area is to exercise these skills on a specific project like an inven tion contest. We at the Charlotte Jewish Day School are looking for ward to this event. The child ren are working in the class room on various skills that will enable and assist them to create and make an invention of their own. Every child will gain recognition and special participation certificates. Aside from this, every grade level winner will receive a $250 U.S. Savings Bond from the Weekly Reader. The winning invention -will be displayed at the National Inventors Expo in Washington, D.C. in 1988. We will share our ideas and in ventions with you as soon as they are entered. In the mean time, our students are having fun and inventing their dreams to the future.
