Charlotte Chapter BBW
Hadassah Travels
(L to R) Fran Lyons, Rabbi Seigel, Margie Rolnick at Temple Kahal
Kodesh Beth Elohim.
HaLailah BBW
Once again HaLailah
brought Chanukah to 27 shut-
ins, needy and elderly mem
bers of our community. Penny
Eisenberg and her committee
filled baskets with potatoes,
oil, applesauce, menorahs,
candles and gifts. The
decorated baskets were
delivered with the help of
Jewish Family Services.
•
On February 21, HaLailah
and The Jewish Family Ser
vices Task Force will cospon
sor a project on the handi
capped. The program,
targeted for both adults and
children in the Jewish com
munity, is presented by The
Center for Independent Liv
ing. It will feature a puppet
show for the children; adults
will participate in a planned
program/discussion. Lunch
will be served by HaLailah
members following this pro
gram.
•
HaLailah will host a pro
gram on genetics March 1 at
Charlotte Memorial Hospital.
The film, “Healthie'* Babies,
The Genetic Era,” will be
shown. A discussion will
follow led by Lisa Amacher, a
genetic counselor at the hospi
tal.
•
The Older Adult Luncheon
will be held on March 13.
HaLailah’s membership will
prepare and serve a delicious
lunch after which members of
BBYO will entertain.
•
Many thanks to those who
helped the Cerebral Palsy
Center with their weekly
recreational swims at the JCC.
The CP swim has been discon
tinued for the winter and will
resume in March.
•
On Thursday mornings, In
ternational House is where in
ternationals gather and talk
with other Enghsh speaking
people. Each month different
groups provide refreshments
for these sessions. HaLailah
members are currently sup
porting International House
by bringing baked goods for
these monthly meetings.

participated in the March for
Soviet Jewry in Washington,
D.C, on December 6 by mak
ing over 100 bag lunches that
were enjoyed by all the par
ticipants in the March from
our city. Included in the
lunches were home baked
goodies made by our members.
We also stuffed and addressed
envelopes with pre-information
on the March that were mailed
to local and state leaders.
Thanks to the following
women who helped us with
this project: Roz Cooper,
Nancy Blacher, Dorothy
Shapiro, Beth Linderman, Vd
Blumenthal, Margie Liebstein,
Mickey Waldman, Nina Haas,
Bobbi Bernstein, Vicki Hop
kins and Bussie Goldberg.

In November, a membership
brunch was held at Beth Lin
derman’s home. Good food.
With absolute style and
grace, Chai-Chaverim BBG
once again captured the
coveted spirit award at Winter
Cultural Convention held this
year in Charlotte. The girls
were also successful in song
and scrapbook contests.
But it didn’t stop there!
They volunteered to help the
Charlotte Jewish Federation
on Super Sunday. They also
cosponsored a dance with
USY, BETY and the Con
solidated Jewish High School
on December 19 and planned
a Mexican/Chemukah psirty
with AZA on December 22.
Then came Regiongils, the
most awesome convention of
the year, as BBYOers know it.
It’s when folks from Virginia
and North Carolina come to
gether to elect new officers,
meet new people and have a
great time. It was a four-day
convention over Christmas va
cation. Instead of not knowing
what to do while they were out
of school, the kids spent the
time together being Jewish.
Charlotte BBYO has al-
new friends and the warmth of
BBW flowed easily. The
following are our newest
members: Nina Haas, Pearl
Mann, Merle Purvis, Joann
Bigel, Andrea Kovner, Mary
Horn, Adrianne Eisner, Selma
Melasky, Janet Minkin, Rosa
lind Taranto, Frada Mozenter
and Bessie Greenberg.

ready begun planning for their
annual Sweetheart-Beau
dance in February. With
almost four months of plan
ning, this dance is going to be
a bash. It’s almost like a
BBYO prom, including the
“king zmd queen.” (Chapter
Sweetheart and Beau are
crowned at the dance.)

Educational? You bet! Our
tour guide, Rabbi Robert
Seigel, shared the history of
Jewish Charleston with thirty-
eight enthusi£istic adults as we
cruised through the historic
district of Charleston on a
magnificent, balmy November
18th afternoon. Rabbi Seigel
made us feel as if we were
entering his home. Every
where we went, be it Temple
Kahal Kodesh Beth Elohim,
The Coming Street Hebrew
Cemetery, or Beth Elohim’s
Archives Museum, Rabbi
Seigel’s personal friends were
there to greet us. Among them
was Sammy Jacobs, past
president of Temple Beth
Elohim, who shared fasci
nating stories of Charleston
Jewish natives dating back to
pre-Revolutionary times,
bringing the Temple’s history
£ilive as we walked through the
Hebrew Cemetery together.
We thoroughly enjoyed our
afternoon, including a lunch
eon at the famous Mills House
Hadassah presents a most
delightful musical program to
be given by the Charlotte
Opera at Shalom Park on
Janusu-y 20 at 10:30 a.m.
Don’t forget to come and
The Dorothy Gutmann Group
of Hadassah’s meeting on
Nov. 18 was very informative.
A 4-part skit was presented by
six members of the group.
Refreshments and socializing
followed the meeting.
The group will meet on Jan.
20 at 8 p.m. at Shalom Park.
Emphasis will be on Jewish
National Fund month with a
Hadassah-oriented Bingo a-
Hotel and visits to the Bat
tery, Meeting Street and the
Old Slave Market. A high
point of the afternoon was a
visit to Grace Episcopal
Church, where we were warm
ly greeted by Tommy Thorn
hill, a past Warden of the
church, who shared with us, in
a delightful way, the history of
the church’s stained-glass win
dows, highlighting the beau
tiful “Women’s Window” de
picting Hadassah’s founder,
Henrietta Szold. The entire
day, filled with friendship,
laughter and the sharing of
knowledge, was one we will
always remember.
