Page 14-THE NEWS-February, 1988 Hibel Lithograph Presented as Gift to the Foundation An Edna Hibel colored lithograph, “Jenifer and Children”, has been presented to the Foundation by friends of Jill Newman in memory of her mother, Virginia Liv ingston. The artwork was per sonally selected by Jill who has been an admirer of Hibel’s work for many years. Edna Hibel’s artwork is in many collections throughout the United States and the world. Mainly she depicts mothers and children from all cultures. Her works are in many media from oil paints to sculpture and porcelain £irt. She is also famous for her lithographs. There is a Hibel Museum in. Palm Beach, Flori da and a six-thousand member Edna Hibel Society. The piece has been hung in the Adult Lounge. You may view it there and at the same time read about the artist in the brochure nearby. The Foundation at Shalom Park is most appreciative to have been selected as the re cipient of this noteworthy gift. —Ethel Gordon Support Our Advertisers This That Steven Haas, music director/cantor at Temple Beth El V’Shalom, will be making his Virginia opera debut in March singing leading roles in a dou ble billing of “I Pagliacci” and "Cavalleria Rusticana”. Sing ing both leading roles on the same evening is a rare event and quite a challenge for any singer. Steven has sung both roles separately on many occa sions in Europe and in the U.S. but never on the same even ing. Performance dates are March 4, 6, 11, 13 and 18 in Norfolk and Richmond, VA. Avi will be receiving her degree in business administration in May. Neil Horowitz, son of Nicki Cohen and Steve Horowitz, has been named a Morehead Scholar finalist. He attends Ashbrook High School, Gastonia. • Eddie Fleishman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Fleishman, recent ly graduated from East Carolina University with a B.S. from the School of Technology and Industry. • At the Appalachian State Tournament, recently held in Boone, NC, Matt Pera, son of Judy Pera and Albert Pera, came in third in the four-man debate team competition. Stanley and Elkie Tulman celebrate 40 years of marriage on Feb. 7, i988. Their children. Dr. Daniel and Melissa Tulman of Atlanta, Peter and Deborah Telem of Charlotte. Joseph Tulman and Deborah Green field of Washington, D.C., have honored them by star ting a “new tradition” for the Speizman Jewish Library at Shalom Park. They have created the Tulman Library Tribute Fund as an endow ment. Interest from the Fund will be used to purchase Israeli books and periodicals for the years to come. Stanley and Elkie Tulman Susan (Mrs. Hy) Bruck, a past president of Charlotte Chapter BBW and Executive Board member of National BBW, has recently returned from a ten-day Leadership Seminar in Israel. She and 21 other BBW leaders from the U.S. and Canada also visited the Children’s Home in Israel and met with Hebrew University participants in BBW’s Arab-Jewish Student Project. • Gerry Rohde will be performing the role of Pappy Yokunti in the CPCC Theatre production of “Li’l Abner” this month. Gerry has performed for many years as a singer, trombonist, baritone horn player and violinist for meuiy musical and theatrical groups, including singing in the ’50s with the Amato Opera Co. in New York City. During the ’70s, he and his sons formed the “Rohde Family Band” and p>erformed in the “Borscht Circuit.” Since retiring from his law practice in 1985, Gerry has been the Sat. evening accordionist at the Bavarian Haus Restaurant. Recently he completed writing the book, lyrics and music for a musical comedy and is trying to arrange for its production. • Among those elected to serve on the Charlotte board of direc tors for First Citizens Bank are: Ronald Gordon, president of R&S Textile Machinery Co. and Harry Swimmer, president of Swimmer Insurance Agency Inc.
