He has detailed his years of study in to a very informative book which traces the Venetian Ghetto from its 16th-century beginnings to the Fascist depredations of 1943-45. The English word “ghetto” derives from the name of the island on which Venetian Jews were forced to live in segrega tion after 1516. In this well-documented history focusing on the politi cal, financial and cultural dynamics of the ghetto, Cali mani also offers fascinating in sights into Venetian and Euro pean history from the Renais sance until World War II. Ma jor subjects discussed are the Inquisition, the Marranos, the attitudes of the Church, the role of Venice as a crossroads, trades open to the Jews, and the organization of the Jewish community. Jews are seen as desired as well as detested and the treatment of the Jews in Venice throughout the cen turies reflects both Christian and Jewish points of view. The life and work of leading political and cultural figures, such as doctors, rabbis, writers, merchants are de picted. Calimemi brings to life the many who made their home in the crowded walled enclave. To quote Elie Wiesel: “The average tourist goes to Venice to visit the Rialto or the Lido, but Jews go there to see the ghetto. This is because, of all the medieval ghettos, the one in Venice is the most famous. “Likewise, of all the books written about the ghetto, Ric cardo Calimani’s is the best. The author writes with the erudition of a historian, the terseness of a journalist, and the captivating style of a memorialist. In a long series of events and portraits, he gives us a document that reads like an adventure story.” Scattered throughout the book are some interesting photographs and reproduc tions of drawings and sket^ ches. There is also an added bonus of a glossary of Hebrew terms. This is helpful for those who are not overly familiar with Hebrew. For students, historians and anyone with an interest in Jewish or Italian history and culture, this book makes for fascinating and essential reading.
