Many of you are already well ac quainted with Roz as she has been serving as the part-time director of Temple Beth El V’Shalom’s religious school. She will not be relinquishing that position since that oc cupies only her afternoons and Sunday, giving her ample time to teach the kindergarten class which meets Monday through Friday in the morning. Roz is the wife of Ivan Cooper, an environmental engineer. They have three children: Alana, 13; Micah, 10 and Shira, 7. Roz is originally from Queens, NY but she and her family recently moved here from Boulder, Colorado where they resided for nine years. Roz has an impressive background, being well educated in both lay and Judaica subjects, including Hebrew. She comes from a strong conservative home, but as a child attended an Or thodox Schul in New York. She received a B.A. in Sociology from Colby College, WatervilJe, Maine, and her M.Ed from National College of Education, Evanston, lUinois. She received her degree in special education-learning disabilities. She then taught special learning disability children in Libertyville, Illinois. In Boulder she directed the Hebrew School at Congrega tion Bonai Shalom and also taught a class of 5-year-olds at the Mountainview Preschool. She loves working with kindergarten-age children, finding that the first year is crucisil in forming their proper attitude towards learning. Roz stated, “It is my hope that we can create a comfortable at mosphere for the growth and stimulation of their minds... having fun while doing it.” She will be teaching both English and Judaica to the children. This had not been done before in the previous kindergarten class and is a decided plus for the children’s education. When asked about her other interests, besides teaching and her family, Roz replied, “I LOVE tennis!” She ^so loves Israel and stated that she could hardly wait until this summer when she will be mak ing her fourth visit there. She will be leaving the end of July for approximately two weeks to attend the CAJE Con ference in Jerusalem. She no doubt will come back with some new teaching skills. Two years ago the entire family went to Israel and worked on a Moshav in the Golan Heights for three weeks and then spent an additional two weeks visiting and touring I srael. Because they also love Israel, she might consider “taking them along” this summer. ^ Tu B’Shvat Extravaganza J Children: I • Make and eat “Fruit of the Trees Sundaes” • Plant your own tree! • Learn about Tu B’Shvat! Straz « Ages and Stages” Attended by Many Parents By Berta Straz Our second morning semi nar was held on January 20. Anda W. Cochran, operator of “Totline”, and editor of the newsletter. Reaching, was our key speaker. She is a well known Day Care consultant and trainer. She has conducted a number of seminars for various groups involved in the development, education and care of young children. Ms. Cochran received her undergraduate degree in Child Development and Family Re lations from the University of N.C. at Greensboro and has taken undergraduate work at UNC-Charlotte. Prior to her current position as Coordi nator of Preventive Services with the Mecklenburg County Area Department of Mental Health, Ms. Cochran was an instructor in child care at Cen tral Community College. A group of 50 anxious mothers and fathers attended our morning seminar. Ms. Cochran started the discus sion by saying that “We parents get so involved into managing our children that we tend to forget the develop mental stage of develop ment!” She says, “Develop ment is a matter of fact and life is a whole series of developmental stages.” She described how development moves through various rough periods known as the equilib rium and the disequilibrium periods. Development comes from head to toe, and from the innermost part to the outer most part of the body. She pointed out that everything children do has its own se quences. Children don’t think like adults; they don’t have the discrimination that we adults have control of. She then touched upon the various stages of play which include: solitary play, parallel play, sociative play and co operative play. She concluded by saying that they don’t lose these stages throughout life: they (children) just add on to it. Our morning seminar con cluded with bagels and coffee and a question and answer period. We were proud to pre sent this program in conjunc tion with Temple Israel Pre school and the JCC Mother’s Morning Out Program. Say It with a CJDS Card.
