The Charlotte Yiddish Institute will be celebrating its 10th anniversary at Wildacres, May 5-8, 1988. Started in 1979, by a few dedicated Yiddishists in Charlotte, the Charlotte Yiddish Institute has had a decade of very successful events. Highlights of the past ten years are: 1. Sponsorship of monthly Yiddish Vinkl at the “J" offer ing Yiddish classes and cultural programs. 2. SfK)nsorship of world-wide Yiddish Folk Song Contest with awards of $1800 in prizes. 3. Yiddish Institute scholarships awarded to college students enrolled in Yiddish Studies programs. 4. Yiddish Institute scholarships made available to those needing financial assistance. 5. Allocations of funding to worthy Yiddi^ publications and Jewish organizations: The Forward Newspaper; Der Algemeiner Journal; YIVO Institute for Jewish Research; League for Yid dish; Yugntruf, Youth for Yiddish; Columbia University’s Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language; World Coucil for Yiddish and Jewish Culture; National Yiddish Book Center; Charlotte Jewish Community Center; Washington March for Soviet Jewry; underwriting of Yiddish publications in Bucharest, Roumania, Miami, FI. and Tel Aviv, Israel. 6. Featured outstanding speakers and performers in Yiddish culture and academia. 7. Capacity enrollment covering every region of the United States and several foreign nations.
