“Shalom Sesame” is £m experimental series — the first foreign
version of “Sesame Street” to be adapted for an American au
dience (children ages 2-10 and their parents.) Through a lively
mixture of animation, song, comedy and film, “Shalom Sesame”
explores the people, places, language and culture of Israel wMe
introducing children to Hebrew words and phrases. Familiar
“Sesame Street” muppets, such as Bert and Ernie, have
adopted Israeli names and speak Hebrew as well as English.
The shows are hosted by violinist Itzhak Perlman and actress
Bonnie Franklin (“One Day at a Time”).
“SAFE HAVEN”
Monday 10:00 p.m. Apr. 11
“Safe Haven” is a program that tells the story of America’s
only refugee shelter for Holocaust victims. In 1944, 982 refugees
from 18 European countries were brought to the United States
as guests of President Franklin Roosevelt. For 18 months, the
refugees were confined to Fort Ontario, an old army garrison
in Oswego, New York, surrounded by a fence and barbed wire.
“THE COURAGE TO CARE”
Sunday 6:30 p.m. April 17
“The Courage To Care” tells the extraordinary story of the few
non-Jews who risked their lives to rescue and protect Jews in
Nazi-occupied Europe. The commentary is by scholar-author
and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel. The film speaks to
the power of individueJ responsibility and demonstrates how
ordinary actions in extraordin£U“y circumstances can make a
difference.
