Charlotte Jewish Day School VourOollaraWoHt Mart Happy 40th to Our Beloved Israel! School Holds ItS Owil ScclcV By Berta Straz In celebrating Yom Ha- atzmaut our students were kept busy creating and being creative in their writings and wishes. Not only did they put their birthday wishes on paper for their brothers and sisters in ERETZ ISRAEL, but cele brated this marvelous day in many different ways at our school. With the assistance of Nan Blum, the art teacher from the Community School of the Arts, they created their own t-shirts with the 40th emblem. Each child had his/her own masterpiece to wear and enjoy in Israel’s celebration marking its indepenence! They also had a special week called “My dream week in Israel” in which every day a different topic, city or person was discussed and their hopes and wishes for our M’dinat-Israel were ex pressed. Israeli food was on the menu for a day, as well as dancing, singing, and lots of creativity to accompany those special days. In conjunction with the en tire community, our school participated at services for Yom Ha-atzmaut which were held April 22 at Temple Beth El V’Shalom. We sang, prayed and entertained the con^ega- tion with our own version of Israel’s Independence Day. It followed with an Oneg Shab- bat sponsored by the entire Jewish community. Thanks to Ziva London for preparing the older children with the presentation about Israel’s 40th birthday! Yom Huledet Sameach to Israel! With much delight we tra veled to Clemmons, N.C. and visited with our “Bubbes and Zaydes.” We took a special pr^uction for them and really shared our innermost ruach (spirit) with each and everyone of them. We made them feel special about Independence Day and were delighted to per form and share some of our time with them. It’s a mitzvah to spend time with our seniors and our children are aware of how important this day was for all of us. A “simchah” should be enjoyed by both young and old and that is precisely what happened when we visited the Blumenthal Home. Our stu dents got to experience an au thentic Seder. It was held at Shalom Park on March 31. Haggadot were passed out and everyone participated. The students led the various parts of the Seder from the Kadesh...U’rhatz...to the Dayenu, and discussed situa tions in other parts of the world. Every nigun possible was incorporated into our Seder which was officiated and assisted by Ziva London, our main Hebrew-Judaic teacher. As we approached the Shulchan-Orech, eyes lit up and everyone ran for the Pesachdike luncheon: Gefilte fish, matzah, fruits, cakes, home baked goodies and many other treats. No Seder is com plete without the Hallel and the official tunes emd songs to conclude the celebrating of Pesach. It was an exciting ex perience and a good hands-on opportunity for our yeladim to get the feel of the holiday and thus carry these same sym bolic rituals home for their own celebration. We hope that your holiday was as pleasant and as educa tional as ours. That is what makes this night different from all other nights! A part of the group at the Seder.
