Page 5-THE NEWS-June/July, 1988 Jewish Family Services Vo«jr- OolW-« Wor-4 Har-a Thoughts from Adrienne By Adrienne Rosenberg, JFS Director Many people find that it is hard to be Jewish and single in Charlotte. But those, who are over 35, Jewish and single, seem to have the most dilem mas. Of course this includes a wide range of persons from the never married to the divorced to the widowed. It includes people who have children liv ing with them and people whose children are grown or who live with their ex-spouses. It is not a homogenous group but one bound together by the uncertainties in a community that still emphasizes couple- hood, marriage and intact fam ilies. Most of us who fall into this category grew up with role definitions for each sex. That is to say, the messages of what males are supposed to do and be and what females were sup posed to do and be were set. Sexual values were also defi nitely set. One that particular ly comes to mind is that good girls don’t kiss on the first date or that it is all right for a male to test to see what a female will allow, but good girls always said no. But along came the pill, messages of equality of sexes, women’s lib, the way society viewed divorce to be a more common option, and the scare of AIDS. Times and the mes sages of society have changed. but the way we grew up has not. Confusing for many to be or become single again — to be out there dating again where expectations, norms and mores offer no rules except safe sex and to avoid becom ing vulnerable. It means risk ing to get out there in the singles world and yet protect ing one’s self emotionally. Some people, in fact, find it easier to avoid social situa tions rather than risk feeling uncomfortable or being put in the position of a **meat mar ket” arena. Since I have been in town, I have heard many people com plain that the Jewish com munity is not responsive to the social needs of singles. Especially have I heard this from people over 35. Yet, re cent attempts on the part of this agency and the JCC to establish programming have resulted in disappointing at tendance. We can blame this on poor programming in the past; we can blame it on “there’s no good Jewish man (woman) single in my age group.” But, the other side of the coin is that if those of us who are single in this age group want social activities with other Jewish singles, we need only look at our own motivations to risk getting out there in the singles’ world. No, there are no guarantees we will meet someone special; no, there are no guarant^s we will feel totally comfortable. But do you know of any other way to get Jewish singles together and meet social needs? Please feel free to call me to share your thoughts. For those of us who fall in this category, it is a challenging time in our lives. It doesn’t have to be avoided. N reenspon ^ A Af«oniatfis I Inc. & Associates I Inc.
