Camp Gan Israel Was Bigger and Better This Year

camp season this summer. A
host of new exciting activities
was added to the camp sched
ule.
This year also saw more
than 80 children registered in
the three-week camp. Mariashi
Groner, administrator at
Lubavitch, attributes the suc

A tiny tots group was also
introduced this year under the
direction of Debbi Maslov.
The children used the oppor
tunity to leam about Judaism
in a fun and exciting way.
Each morning exercise was
done to the tunes of Jewish
songs. The camp was divided
into four groups (in addition to
the tiny tots). The groups were
identified by names which
were indicative of Jewish
themes: Torah, Tzedakah,
Mezuzah and Shabbas. Each
group was assigned a van with
the group’s name and they
learned how to relate their
name with many Jewish ideas.
Camp activities included
sports, swimming, boating,
horseback riding, cookouts
and many field trips. Many
places were visited: Asheboro
Zoo, Carowinds, Energy Ex-
plorium. Discovery Place and
Buffalo Ranch.
Lunch was served daily at
the Chabad House during
which the children learned new
Jewish songs and participated
in fun games. Creative work
by the campers, part of the
special arts and crafts pro
jects, adorned the dining hall.
The children also baked their
own challah for Shabbat and
learned how to separate the
challah dough with its special
blessing.
The counselors, a major part
of the success of the camp, are
students at the Beth Rivkah
Teachers Seminary in Brook-
13m. It is a highly acclaimed
school under the auspices of
Lubavitch in New York.
On the last day of camp, a
special banquet was held, dur
ing which each camper re
ceived a gift. The Chabad
House was decorated in a
festive manner with colorful
balloons and streamers. The
biggest surprise came to Yossi
and Mariashi Groner when
they were presented with a
gold-plated plaque containing
the signatures of all the
campers and staff expressing
thanks for a wonderfiil camp.
A special thank you goes to
Elizabeth and Walter Klein
and Mary and Simon Wo-
jnowich for sharing their
beautiful pools with the
campers.
