Toaff substantiated that charge by displaying bundles of hate mail and scores of photographs of anti-Semitic graffiti at a news conference in the Great Synagogue. • BONN (JTA) — Rabbi Isaac Neuman has renewed his charges that anti-Semitism is rampant in East Germany and has taken another swipe at the leadership of the tiny Jewish conmiunity there, implying it is passive in face of mounting danger. Neuman is the retired Amer ican rabbi who took over as religious leader in East Berlin ten months ago. He quit in the midst of a dispute with Hans Rotstein and Peter Kirchner, the chairmen respectively of the East German and East Berlin Jewish communities. • JOHANNESBURG (JTA) — An upsurge of neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic activity in recent weeks has the South African Jewish community alarmed. The latest incident was the daubing of two swastikas in gold paint on the Torah Center in Yeoville, a Johannesburg suburb, where a yeshiva opened this past spring. Six Israeli scholars arrived recently to study there. • PARIS (JTA) — The last re maining synagogue in Algiers was desecrated by vandals who tore the Torah scrolls, ripped prayer books and broke pews and benches. Algerian police arrested eight teen-agers. • NEW YORK (JTA) - PoUce are investigating vandalism conmiitted against two Jewish sites in Manhattan. In the more serious incident, an Or thodox synagogue in Manhat tan’s Washington Heights sec tion was set on fire May 5 by vandals who stole two Torahs, four mezuzas and other reli gious items. Over half of the congrega tion’s 200 members are Holo caust survivors. The neighborhood is a hotbed of drug-related activity. Budapest to Get Holocaust Memorial NEW YORK (JTA) - Groundbreaking will take place in Budapest for the country’s first public memorial to the 600,000 Hungarian Jews who perished in the Holocaust. Social Action Committee Remember the old joke — What is a camel? It’s a horse built by a conunittee! Well, if you wince at the thought of another committee meeting, this is the group for you! It’s no accident that ACTION is the bold word. We’ll keep meetings to a minimum and work to the maximum. There are many worthwhile programs already in place within our community...more than there are people to staff them...many needs...more than there are people to fill them. That’s where SAC comes in. We’ll find things that need doing and DO them! It's a simple premise and one very familiar to Jews — this idea of the human family real ly taking care of each other. So, whatever your special interest is, problems of the aged, the adolescent, the single parent, the homeless, drug abuse...WE NEED YOU! Together we can make a real difference.
