The first novel. The Night of the Weeping Women, came out in June with favorable reviews nationally. His second novel is due next fall from the Atlan tic Monthly Press. It is set in Chapel Hill and Durham, but he says that there is no one recognizable in it. He decided to be a writer when he went off to UNC-CH in 1964. In the early ’70s he won a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow ship, the Carolina Quarterly Fiction Award and a Thomas Wolfe Memorial Award. He did not start writing his published novel until 1985. In the interim he has been in the construction business in the Chapel Hill area. • Marjorie Weinstock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barnet Weinstock, was one of eight recent graduates of Mecklenburg County high schools among 131 across the state named to receive the 1988 Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship. The federally funded program to promote student exceUence and achievement awards $1,500 scholarships for the first year of study. • Deborah Tager Buchman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Tager, received her Masters degree in Psychology from U. of West Florida. Linda Clark, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith, has received her college degree in nursing. • Neil Horowitz, son of Nicki Cohen and Steve Horowitz, has been awarded the prestigious Morehead Scholarship to UNC- CH. • Several students have been named to the spring Dean’s list of their perspective colleges: Faye (Mrs. Robert) Seigel, at Queens College; Mitchell Sanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Sanders, at DiSce U. (for 3.6 or better GPA); Stacey Marshall, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Barry Marshall, at Duke U. (for at least 3.3 GPA); Sharon Oxer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Oxer, at UNCC (at least 3.4 GPA); Lorin Diamond, daughter of Allin Dia mond and Michael Diamond, at USC; Jonathon Bograd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bograd, at NC State U.; Jeff Estroff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Estroff, at NC State. Some of our junior high school students were honored this sunmier in Duke University’s Talent Identification Program, which searches for mathematically and verbally gifted students in 16 states. Grand Award Winners had to have SAT-Math scores of 600 or more and SAT-Verbal of 550 or over. Peter Singer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Singer, was a local Grand Award Winner, and also a State Award Winner. A State Award Winner had to have a SAT-Math score of at least 500 (boys) or 450 (girls) and SAT-Verbal score of 430. Local State Award Winners were: Jill Blumenthal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Blumenthal; Lawrence Heiman, son of Dr. and Mrs. Jay Jacoby; Mitchell Rolnick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Iven Rolnick; Matthew Sanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Sanders. Jean (Mrs. Philip) Anoff will be included in the 16th edition of Who’s Who in American Women. Jean is president of Sesco, Inc., a specialty advertising company, which has won the Clio Award several times. She is a past president of Charlotte Chapter B’nai B’rith Women and currently a member of the Jewish Family Services Task Force on Substance Abuse. • Two JCC swinmiers, Alexis Lerner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lemer, and Ruthie Abel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Abel, competed in the N.C. Long Course Age Group Swinmiing Championship in High Point, Aug. 5-7. They swam for the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club (MAC) and were part of the team which won the fifth straight title in this state-wide competition. Ruthie swam well in her favorite breast stroke £uid Alexis had a winning time of 2.30.5 in the 200-meter butterfly as well as being a member of the 400*meter !Nedley Relay team that broke the N.C. state record and qualified for a top 16 time. Alexis was chosen as one of the 13-14 year-old girls who represented N.C. in Southern zone competition in Kentucky Aug. 11-13 where 16 teams competed from the southern states. Both Alexis and Ruthie joined Amy Goldman, daughter of Ms. Helen Goldman, to compete in swinmiing at the North American Maccabi Games in Chicago.
