Klein, General Campaign chairman, and Paul Putterman, vice-chairman, are pleased to announce the for mation of the 1989 Campaign workforce, a listing of which appears on this page. The Charlotte Jewish Fed eration is the central agency for the planning and fund rais ing within the Charlotte Jew ish community. Funds are raised in order to meet the needs of its constituent agen cies such as The Jewish Com munity Center, The Founda tion of the Charlotte Jewish Community, Jewish Family Services, the Hebrew Ceme tery, Lubavitch of NC, the Blumenthal Jewish Home, Hillel and UJA. Monies raised provide necessary, critical dollars that fund over 55 con stituent agencies, locally, na tionally, in Israel and around the world. If you are interested in par ticipating in this year’s Fed eration Campaign please call Mike Minkin, Federation ex ecutive director, at 366-5007. Leadership Circle Harry Lemer, A1 Levine and Harry Swimmer, 1989 Leader ship Circle Council chairs, pre sided at the Campaign goal setting dinner held at Rain- tree Country Club on Septem ber 28. This meeting was of critical importance as it was the time when the community leadership came together and heard the requests of all the constituent agencies of Fed eration. Preparations are then made for their own financial statements in the 1989 Cam paign. “It seems the needs always exceed the resources,” said Harry Swinmier. “However, I am sure that the leadership of our conmiunity wiU do all that it can to raise the necessary dollars so that our community can have the services we so direly need and at the same time support the State of Is rael.” This important dinner event was attended by those indi viduals in the Leadership Cir cle Division (givers of $10,000 or more to the Annual Federa tion Drive) and special guests. Small City Executives Institute Held in Toronto In order to upgrade the understanding, skills and per formance levels of professional staff and to influence not only the quality of the profession but dso the vigor of Jewish community life, the Council of Jewish Federations hosted its annual Small City Executives Institute, August 18-23. Held this year in Toronto, Canada, the Institute was at tended by Mike Minkin, exec utive director of the Charlotte Jewish Federation, along with 29 other Federation Executive Directors, who concentrated on the major issue of “Per sonal and Personnel Manage ment.” Mr. Minkin said, “It was ex hilarating to be with my col leagues in an intensely Jewish environment, talking about, thinking about and contem plating Jewish communal Ufe.” The keynote presentation, “The Place of the Small Fed- Mike Minkin eration and the Small Federa tion Executive on the North American Jewish Scene,” was delivered by CJF Executive Vice President Carmi Schwartz. Highlights of the Institute included a two-part series, con ducted by Dr. Rabbi Gunther Plaut, on “Dealing with Jew ish Religious Diversity in the Small Jewish Community: A Historical and Theological Background.” This session featured practical applications and recent conununity experi ences to illustrate issues, prob lems and models. Professor Sylvia Kastenberg shared her expertise with Institute parti cipants in a discussion of “Techniques of Time Manage ment.” A vital component of the year’s Institute was a special course offered under the auspices of the Dorothy and Louis Fox School of Continu ing Professional Education, with the support of the Philip Bernstein Training Center. The course was entitled “CPE — Managing Personnel in the Small Jewish Conununity,” and dealt specificaUy with managing other Jewish com munal professionals; part- time, clerical and technical workers; volunteers, etc. Mor ris Stein, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, was the in structor for the course.
