that Dr. Robert L. Albright,
president of Johnson C. Smith
University, will speak to the
Jewish community. Dr. Al
bright has recently returned
from a mission to Israel spon*
sored by the ADL (Anti-Defa
mation League of B’nai B’rith)
for presidents and top ex
ecutives of member institu
tions of the United Negro Col
lege Fund. Dr. Albright will
speak of his impressions of
Israel and its current situ
ation.

Temple Israel.
“Areyvim Zeh Bazeh: Re
sponsibility and Service —
Federation’s Role in Creating
a Caring Community" will be
the theme of the 57th General
Assembly of the Council of
Jewish Federations, Nov.
16-20, 1988 at the Marriott &
Sheraton Hotels in New
Orleans.
The Assembly, the largest
annual gathering of North
American Jewish community
leaders, is expected to draw
over 3.000 delegates who will
participate in more than 200
meetings, including plenaries,
business sessions, forums,
symposiums, workshops, sem
inars, receptions and other
events.
Bobbi Bernstein, president
of the Charlotte Jewish Fed
eration, is pleased to announce
Charlotte’s strong contingen
cy who will travel to the Gen
eral Assembly this year.
Along with Bernstein and
Mike Minkin, executive direc
tor, are Bobby Damsky, Larry
Gerber, Ruth Goldberg, Vicki
Hopkins, Richard A. Klein,
Alan Kronovet, Harry Lerner,
Paul Putterman, Adrienne
Rosenberg, Sally Schrader, Joel
Goldman,Sandra Weinstein,
Anita and Herman Blumenthal.
In keeping with this year’s
theme, Mandell L. Bermem,
President of CJF, will deliver
the Keynote Address during
the opening plenary session on
Wednesday evening, Nov. 16.
Also scheduled to speak at
the General Assembly are
Simcha Dinitz, Chedrman of
the Jewish Agency Executive
and Former Israeli Ambassa
dor to the United States; Pro
fessor Arnold Eisen, Chairman
of the Department of Judaic
Studies at Stanford Universi
ty, and Mendel Kaplan, Chair
man of the Jewish Agency
Board of Governors.

erations is the national
association of 200 Jewish
Federations, the central com
munity organizations which
serve nearly 800 localities em
bracing a Jewish population of
more than 5.7 million in the
United States and Canada.
Established in 1932, CJF
helps strengthen the work and
the impact of Jewish Federa
tions by developing programs
to meet changing needs, pro
viding an exchange of suc
cessful community experi
ences, establishing guidelines
for fund raising and opera
tions and engaging in joint
planning and action on com
mon purposes dealing with
local, regioned and interna
tional needs.

Hadassah and is a past presi
dent of the organization. She
has also been a dedicated
worker for Temple Israel
Sisterhood and the NC Asso
ciation of Jewish Women.

Barry Farber is the host of
the Barry Farber Show, a
popular New York radio talk
show, and is a prominent, in
ternationally recognized
newscaster. He has been in
and out of Russia and coun
tries behind the Iron Curtain
on numerous occasions. He
also writes articles which have
appeared in numerous maga
zines and is the author of a
new book, Making People
Talk. He is a linguist, being
fluent in Yiddish, Finnish,
Hungarian, Indonesian, Chi
nese, Serbo-Croation, Russian,
Portuguese and writes other
languages more common to
Western Europe. A Phi Beta
Kappa graduate of UNC-CH,
he served as captain of its
wrestling team.
