Morning Program
The morning program is taught by Fern Sander
son, who excels in her teaching methods and, most
importantly, in her rapport with her young stu
dents.
Fern emphasizes the importance of early child
development by providing stimulating tasks that
appeal to the age level and individual ability of
the child. Special attention is devoted to the
development of social skills of cooperation,
negotiation and helping solve interpersonal
problems.
At Gan Yelodim we believe that basic skills de
velop best when they are meaningful to children.
Basic subjects, like math, science, social studies
and health, are integrated through playful pro
jects with the specially designed learn/play equip
ment. The school features weekly instruction in
computer and gym.
Children participate in cooking class where they
learn to measure ingredients. They participate in
dramatic play, listen to and help read stories, and
dictate stories.
Activities are designed to develop self-esteem
in the child and positive feelings toward learning.
“There is no one wiser than the experienced."
Children learn most through participating in
educational projects. They acquire knowledge
about their physical and social worlds through the
playful, active interaction with objects and people.
The school recently hired Susan Fleishman as
a Teacher’s Aide. Her love and affection for the
children add a special touch to the school atmos
phere.
Opportunity for outdoor exploration is provided
on a regular basis. The children observe changes
in the environment, explore plants and animals,
and work with wood and tools.
Afternoon Program
The afternoon program at
Lubavitch, which is taught by
Terry Tucker, is a time for
children to express themselves
through music, drama and art.
The children learn the fundamen
tals of music through active in
volvement. Use of various musi
cal instruments help the children
develop listening skills and in
crease their rhythmic awareness.
Some of the activities include us
ing their bodies to demonstrate
musical terms, such as “legato”
and “staccato,” playing with
rhythm sticks and other instru
ments to develop a sense of tem
po and singing popular children’s
songs that incorporate mime and
whole body movement.
Incorporating creative drama
into our program encourages the
children to use their already-vivid
imaginations. The children have
access to a puppet theatre and a
large selection of hand puppets
which allows them to spontane
ously “act out” and create.
Because spontaneity is such an
important part of being a child, we
provide many ways of inspiring
each child to express himself. Put-
#
ting on “magic” storyteller hats
that fill their heads with ideas for
stories to share with others is just
one example.
Each afternoon our children are
engaged in a different art activi
ty. Painting paper mache dinosaur
eggs, making shapes from peanut
butter playdough and weaving
colored paper strip pictures are
only a few ways that each child is
encouraged to develop creatively.
Twice a month the school takes
educational field trips where they
leam fascinating facts about the
world in which we live. Such trips
include nature tours, Discovery
Place, Children’s Theatre and ex
cursions to observe many aspects
of daily work and life.
