Page 16-THE NEWS-November, 1988 Lubavitch Talmud Torah Classes Show Increased Enrollment The new school year, begun a few months ago, saw an in crease in Lubavitch Talmud Torah enrollment. Over 50 stu dents are now enrolled and learning Judaica on a regular basis. The program features a unique and creative approach to teaching Judaica and has won praise from both parents and children. “My children have developed an exciting positive attitude towards Judaism,” said one parent, at tributing the success to the Lubavitch program. Three times a week, the stu dents meet with their teachers to explore the world of Judaica. In just a short time they have learned to read, write and understand Hebrew. The younger children leam with Mariashi Groner and Chanie Weiss. Both Chanie and Mariashi have excelled in their teaching skills, especially in their rap port with the children. The children also work with ex citing Jewish arts and crafts projects and have created a wonderful collection of holiday objects. The older students are studying with Rabbi Binyo- min Weiss. They have been learning Torah with commen tary, Jewish history and phil osophy. Rabbi Weiss also tutors students for Bar Mitz- vah with a supplementary pro gram. m Robby Sachs and Matthew Sands hold the Torah as other Talmud Torah children form a circle. Simchat Torah and Succoth Celebrated with Special Programs The Hebrew month of Tish- rei is packed with Jewish holidays, of which each has its own destinction with its own observance. Beginning with the solemn day of Rosh Hash- anah and Yom Kippur, and culminating with joyous days of Succoth and Simchat Torah. This year’s Simchat Torah celebration at the Chabad House on October 3 was very joyous. It started with a grand kiddush and festive meal with a variety of holiday foods. There was plenty of L’chaim and schnapps for the 150 who participated in this joyous event. Soon after the meal, which was served buffet style, the fun began. Reciting the verses of “Atoh Horaiso” and the dancing with the Torah, the children were hoisted upon the shoulders of the dsmcers. With flags in hand, they sang and clapped the night away. * * * Simchat Torah in Brooklyn, New York was spectacular at the Lubavitch World Head quarters. Over 15,000 people jammed the main sanctuary to participate in the celebration with the Jewish leader, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Among the many joyous celebrants who came from all over the world was Edward I. Koch, Mayor of New York City. The dancing and singing lasted all evening up to the early hours of morning. The Rebbe emphasized that the joy of Simchat Torah must serve as an inspiration for the entire Jewish year, and since this year is a leap year, it is necessary to increase in joy and happiness. And indeed there was joy in abundance, with the Rebbe leading in the dancing; the roar of thousands of people singing was heard many city blocks away. * * * The Lubavitch Women’s group in Charlotte conducted a special Succoth program in the large succah at the home of Mariashi Groner. Special holiday delicacies were served in honor of the holiday. Rabbi Binyomin Weiss led a discus sion on the meaning of the holiday. Rabbi Yossi Groner partici pated in a Succoth celebration in High Point at the succah of Rabbi Robert Sandman. The celebration has become an an nual event, in addition to the continuous study group with Rabbi Groner in that commu nity.
