Meet the Members of Our Cabinet
Each month a member(s) of our Cabinet will be profiled in the CJN.

Women’s Division Campaign
Chair, announces that this
year’s campaign is being con
ducted by the largest volun
teer work force in the history
of Women’s Division. Forty-
four women have agreed to be
part of this effort for Jewish
survival. These women are
committed to strengthen the
quality of Jewish life.
Ms. Goldstein encourages
aU the women of the Charlotte
Jewish community to open
their hearts and respond to
these women. She urges more
women to join with this group.

Ruth Goldberg
Ruth Goldberg is Editor of
the American Jewish Times
Outlook. She has been active
in the Charlotte Jewish com
munity since she moved here
in 1962 from suburban New
York with her husband, Alan S.,
and sons, Michael and Jona
than. Ruth holds a B.A. degree
in Philosophy from Brandeis
University and an M.A. de
gree in Elementary Education
from New York University.
She is a certified teacher who
was Director of Temple Israel
Daily School (1963-67); taught
secular and Judaic subjects,
kindergarten-6th grade at the
North Carolina Hebrew Acad
emy at Charlotte (1972-80);
taught Hebrew School and led
youth groups at Temple Is
rael.
Since 1972, Ruth has served
continuously on the board of
Charlotte Jewish Federation
and has held the offices of
secretary and vice president.
In 1985 she was the recipient
of a National Council of Jew
ish Federations award for a
project she chedred in Char
lotte: ‘‘Outreach to the Unaf
filiated and Intermarried.”
She is currently chairperson of
the Federation Education
Committee which coordinates
the Adult Institute of Jewish
Studies and a task force for a
Ruth Goldberg
Bureau of Jewish Education.
A cofounder of Federation
Women’s Division, Ruth had
served as its president and
campaign chairperson and is
presently a member of the
campaign cabinet.
Ruth is a member of Temple
Israel and a past president of
its Sisterhood. She is a life
member of Hadassah and be
longs to B’nai B’rith Women,
the Carolinas Association of
Jewish Women and Men, Jew
ish Community Center and the
League of Women Voters.
Ruth’s parents who were
and are devoted synagogue
members and active partici
pants in its affiliated groups,
especially the religious school,
were the role models for her
dedication, both professional
ly and as a volunteer, to the
education and betterment of
the Jewish community in
Charlotte.
Frances M. Lyons
Fran, who was born in
Sharon, Pennsylvania and has
lived in Charlotte for over four
years, serves on the Women’s
Division Cabinet as chair of
the Outreach committee. Her
goal is to reach women like
herself, a Jew-by-choice, to
understand the needs of our
community, feel a part of the
community and better under
stand the concepts involved
with tzedakah.
She sees the need to educate
people like herself and has
been involved within the Char
lotte Jewish community since
her marriage to Jeffrey Lyons
in 1986. Her personal commit
ment to Judaism begem when
she was studying with Rabbi
Robert Seigel of Temple Beth
El V’Shalom. She realized
upon reading Rabbi Seigel’s
book. Intermarriage: A Guide
for Jewish Parents, £md going
to class, the need for only one
religion in a family unit. The
process involved studying the
Jewish view of Jewish ideas
and Fran’s personal commit
ment of how to live her life as
an ongoing process.
She loves to organize “work
and play” emd as Outreach
chair, she is coordinating a
very important facet of Fed
eration.
Fran is the step-mother of 3
children, Andrew, 11 and
Frances Lyons
Allison and Nancy', bVi, and
the mother of a daughter Kyle,
18-months-old. Fran is a mem
ber of the Board of the Char
lotte Chapter of Hadassah and
is involved with B ’nai B’rith
Women and Temple Beth El
V’Shalom Sisterhood. In her
“spare time” she works with
her husband, is a co-pilot in
the company plane, plays ten
nis, golf and needlepoints.
Women’s Division is proud
