For the past two years, Nina has been part of the JCC program staff on a part- time basis, most recntly as the Summer Mother’s Morning Out Director. Prior to that, Nina supervised and implemented the JCC’s Kaleidoscope program and was an instructor with some of the JCC’s pre-school classes. Nina enjoys teaching aero bics, cooking and traveling. Nina and husband Alan have been in Charlotte for two years. Prior to that, they resided in Michigan. We are very pleased to have Nina as a member of the JCC’s Professional Staff. She is very anxious to begin her tenure with us and is looking forward to con tributing a great deal to the Center’s growth. We are confi dent that Nina’s professional skills and warm personality will be an asset to the ‘J’ family. Flute Lessons Taught by Emil Pagano, formerly from Cleveland, Ohio, where he played flute and piccolo with Cleveland Symphony Orchestra for 17 years. He later went on to NYC; played with New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Metropolitsui Opera Orchestra. Please RSVP to Fran Rosenberg, 366-5007. Gorelick Hall was magically transformed into a concert hall on the evening of Oct. 23. It was an evening of “firsts” — the “first” concert series ever inaugurated by the JCC; con cert goers were treated to im proved acoustics in Gorelick Hall as a result of the “first” use of our new acoustic shell. The biggest treat of all, however, was the music. Ap proximately 125 people lis tened attentively to three selections performed by the Carolina Chamber Players, a group of Charlotte Symphony musicians dedicated to the eu‘t of chamber music. The selec tions were the Schumann “Feury Tales,” “Lullaby” by George Gershwin, and the Pro- koffiev “Overture on Hebrew Themes.” The musicians gave the audience background in formation about each piece; their performances were well- crafted and warmly ap preciated by the audience. After the intermission, con cert saxophonist James Houlik took center stage to perform four selections by Jewish composers. It is rare to hear a tenor sax ophone played with such finesse, and it was evident to everyone why Mr. Houlik is the world’s foremost artist on his instrument. At the conclu sion of his performance, he was greeted with a standing ovation and treated the audi ence to an encore. Patrons were invited to a “meet the artist” reception at the home of Roz Greenspon after the concert. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the even ing and agreed that this con cert was a very successful first step towards establishing a concert series at the ‘J’. Special theinks goes to Barry Hantman, executive director of the JCC, for his support of this series and to Scott Snyder for his invaluable assistance in putting the series together. Sincerest thanks also to Roz Greenspon for graciously host ing the Patrons’ party and to the Cultural Arts Committee and JCC Board for promoting and supporting this event. The next concert in this series will take place on April 2, 1989 at 7:30 p.m. in Gorelick Hall. Entitled “Come to the Jewish Caba ret,” the evening will feature music from Yiddish theater, Klezmer music, and many sur prises brought to you by VIVA KLEZMER!, Steven Haas, and friends. Seating will be cabaret style and deli snacks wiU be available during the concert. Join your friends for an evening of lively enter tainment in a cabaret setting. Cedi the J at 366-5007 for ticket information. Gene Kavadlo Cultural Arts Chairman Thirty Something The over thirty singles group has been meeting regu larly and having great times. Recently the group had dinner out and then attended the Punch Line Comedy Club and laughed to the jokes of three very talented comedians. Plans are to do this again soon. We will be meeting the first Wednesday of every month, 6-8 p.m. at the “J” for wine, cheese and socializing. Other activities are also planned monthly.
