Gorelick Hall was magically
transformed into a concert hall
on the evening of Oct. 23. It
was an evening of “firsts” —
the “first” concert series ever
inaugurated by the JCC; con
cert goers were treated to im
proved acoustics in Gorelick
Hall as a result of the “first”
use of our new acoustic shell.
The biggest treat of all,
however, was the music. Ap
proximately 125 people lis
tened attentively to three
selections performed by the
Carolina Chamber Players, a
group of Charlotte Symphony
musicians dedicated to the eu‘t
of chamber music. The selec
tions were the Schumann
“Feury Tales,” “Lullaby” by
George Gershwin, and the Pro-
koffiev “Overture on Hebrew
Themes.” The musicians gave
the audience background in

Of the pros
mance with lively commentary
about the music, the com
posers and his instrument. It
is rare to hear a tenor sax
ophone played with such
finesse, and it was evident to
everyone why Mr. Houlik is
the world’s foremost artist on
his instrument. At the conclu
sion of his performance, he
was greeted with a standing
ovation and treated the audi
ence to an encore.
Patrons were invited to a
“meet the artist” reception at
the home of Roz Greenspon
after the concert. Everyone
thoroughly enjoyed the even
ing and agreed that this con
cert was a very successful first
step towards establishing a
concert series at the ‘J’.
Special theinks goes to Barry
Hantman, executive director
of the JCC, for his support of
this series and to Scott Snyder
for his invaluable assistance in
putting the series together.
Sincerest thanks also to Roz
Greenspon for graciously host
ing the Patrons’ party and to
the Cultural Arts Committee
and JCC Board for promoting
and supporting this event.

series will take place on April
2, 1989 at 7:30 p.m.

ret,” the evening will feature

Klezmer music, and many sur
prises brought to you by
