Page 22-THE NEWS-December, 1988 Our Organizations Charlotte B’nai B’rith Women HaLailah BBW Congratulations are in order for Charlotte Chapter! We are once again, for the third year in a row, the recipients of the coveted 1988 Sidney G. Kus- worm Award, given by B'nai B’rith International to the most outstanding chapter in community volunteer service. An award presentation will take place next year, hosted by a regional official. Charlotte BBW is also ex cited to be a sponsor of the Soviet Jewry Rally to be held Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. at Shalom Park. Fall Special Olympics Bowl ing took place Nov. 4 at Cen tennial Lanes. There to help score and cheer contestants on were Janine Rosner, Beth Lin- derman, Ailene Lorber, Bussie Goldberg, Margie Liebstein, Helen Rosenbaum, Ruth Gold berg and Bernice Rousso. Charlotte Memorial and Presbyterian hospitalized children received decorated styrofoam “pumpkins” on Halloween, thanks to Helen Rosenbaum, Valerie Blumen- thal, Elaine Olshan and Thelma Levy. Extra pump kins were also given to the children at Arosa House. We plan again this year to provide the Arosa House chil dren and their families with a Thanksgiving dinner. Nancy Blacker, 541-8835, is the chair person for this event. Our S.A.D.D. Event, held Oct. 27 was very informative. Thanks go to Lynda White, Beth Linderman and the pan elists from area Junior and Senior High Schools who spoke on programs planned with the S.A.D.D. Chapters in their schools. A representative from Safe Drive was also pre sent and spoke on their pro grams and services. Gift Wrap has begun and WE NEED YOU! Please sign up. Any time you can give us is greatly needed. Eastern Region BBYO Convention The BBYO convention of the year is coming! BBYO’s annual three night/four day convention will be held Dec. 23-26 at the Airport Marriott in Greensboro. The fee for the convention is expected to be approximately $120. Further information is being sent from the regional office to all registered BBYO members. Once again HaLailah brought Thanksgiving to the older adults in our conmiunity on Nov. 10. The Chai ^oup dined on turkey with all its ac coutrements. Many thanks to Jane Abel for chairing this fun event. The Chai group will also be treated to a Chanukah lunch eon on Dec. 5 at the JCC. The traditional latkes will be served. The meal will be a nice beginning to the festive holi day. Chanukah will again be brought to 27 shut-ins, needy and elderly members of our community. Under the leader ship of Karen Rasenberg, HaLailah members gather^ at the home of Penny Eisen- berg to fill baskets with potatoes, oil, applesauce, menorahs, candles and gifts. These decorated baskets were delivered with the help of Jew ish Family Services. On Nov. 20, The Becky Shu- limson Memorial Children’s Library at the JCC was dedi cated. This memorial was es tablished in memory of Becky Shulimson, a charter member of HaLailah. Donations of $5 or more were coUected for pur chase of books for the library. Donations in honor or in mem ory of a loved one can be made to this on-going fund by caU- ing Penny Eisenberg, 847-4037. HaLailah’s Hunter House Project continues with a pro gram meeting on Dec. 8. Lany Gerber will discuss budgeting and managing finances with the new mothers. The program wiU begin at 7 p.m. at Hun ter House. The annual Baby Shower will occur in March. Donations are appreciated. Thirty-six new perspective members were invited to the home of Lauren Lassman. • HaLailah members will be participating in Charlotte Chapter’s annual holiday gift wrapping fund raiser. • More than 20 HaLailah members have already volun teered to cook for Rachel House. HaLailah is providing dinner to the residents every Tuesday night. To volun teer call Rachel Rosenfeld, 535-1955. • On Nov. 13 members as sisted Crisis Assistance Min istry in its change of head quarters.
