Senator Jcaac Hdms (ctr) meeting with Rabbis Yowi Groncr (L) from Charlotte
and Pinchus Herman (R) from Raleigh at “Education Day USA.”
The United States Congress
, passed a bill designating Friday,
April 6, 1990 as “Education Day
U.S.A.” The bill, which passed
both houses of Congress with an
overwhelming majority, calls on
the American people to focus on
the morality in education.
The date chosen honored the
Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Men-
achem M. Schneerson, who
celebrated his 88th birthday on
that day, which also corresponds
to II Nissan.
“The Rebbe has been instru
mental in raising the awareness
of the Seven Noahdite Laws
among the people of this na
tion,” said one of the many
cosponsors of this bill.
On the eve of “Education Day
U.S.A.” many delegates from all
across the U.S. assembled on
Capitol Hill for a special recep
tion in honor of the Rebbe and
his efforts for education.
Among the many senators and
congressmen who attended were
Senator Jesse Helms (R-N.C.)
and Senator Terry Sanford (D-
N.C.).
Senator Sanford expressed his
good wishes to the Rebbe and
was especially proud that Luba
vitch has two centers in North
Carolina, one in Charlotte, the
other in Raleigh. The Senator
said that Lubavitch is the only
group which comes to Washing
ton as a non-self-interest group.
“Your interest is good and
decent education; it is people like

yourself who will keep us right,”
he said.
Senator Helms spoke of his
continued commitment to Israel,
and related his arguments to the
State Department to refuse any
negotiations or recognition of
the PLO murderers.
The Senator reflected on his
week-long visit to Israel several
years ago and how impressed he
was with the educational work
of Lubavitch. You are celebrat
ing the birthday and fortieth
anniversary of leadership of a
great human being who deserves
strong recognition from all of us
in Congress.
Both Rabbi Yossi Groner of
Charlotte and Rabbi Pinchus
Herman of Raleigh attended the
reception in Washington.
T eacher Tips
Question: How can I get my
child to clean up at home? My
simple request for him to pick
up his toys turns into a battle
of wills.
Answer: Using one or more of
the following techniques may
elicit more cooperation in get
ting your child to accomplish a
given task.
When you are ready for the
child to clean up, either direct
him to the next task or forewarn
him. Examples are: “After you
put'that toy away, let’s play with
this one,” or “In a few minutes,
it will be clean-up time.”
Your positive suggestion and
response is important. Smiling,
praising, or helping the child is
an effective stimulus.
Asking your child to clean his
room may seem overwhelming
to him. Try assigning limited
tasks, such as “Pick up your
stuffed animals.”
If possible, give your child
valid limited choices; for exam
ple, “Are you going to pick up
the blocks or the books first?”
Your child will feel more in
control of his situation and,
therefore, will be more willing
to participate in the task.
Your questions are invited.

The Lubavitch Model Matzoh
Bakery helped many Charlotte
youngsters learn about the
meaningful holiday in a hands-
on manner.
The annual project, which was
held at the Chabad House, gave
the children an opportunity to
learn about the history and the
rituals of Passover. The event
attracted many hundreds of
local children who eagerly
stepped up to mix and roll the
dough and finally bake the
matzoh.
The matzoh of course was
only a replica of the genuine
matzoh, which is also called
“Shmurah” since the wheat is
guarded from the moment it is
cut. However, authentic matzoh
was readily available for the
children and their parents who
attended the Bakery.
Rabbi Binyomin Weiss, coor
dinator of the project, said, “It
was delightful to see the little
bakers picking up the fmished
product.” A special educational
video presentation followed the
baking.
Students at Lubavitch Dfty
School conducted their own
Model Seder at the Chabad
House under the careful guid
ance of Chanie Weiss, Judaica
teacher.
The kindergarten students
even wrote their own Haggadah
and together with the first and
second graders lit the Holiday
candles, recited the Kiddush,
asked the four questions and
sampled Seder food prepared by
Chanie Weiss.
