A Cause for Celebration — A Show of Support
Spring Show Offers Extraordinary Opportunity for Soviet Resettlement Effort
The Southern Spring Show
Gala is an important fundraising
and educational opportunity for
the campaign to resettle Soviet
Jews in Charlotte.
With the theme “A Cause for
Celebration — A Show of Sup
port,” the event will take place
Sunday, Feb. 24, 7:30-10 p.m.
at the Charlotte Merchandise
Mart. Tickets are $20 per per
son, tax deductible, with all
proceeds going to the local
resettlement campaign.
For 31 years, the Southern
Spring Show has been a wel
come respite from late-winter
doldrums for hundreds of thou
sands of people across the Ca-
rolinas. llie show is a prelude
to Spring, featuring a look at just
about everything from the latest
in interior design and lawn
furniture to beautifully planted
gardens and landscaping. This
year, the event will run from
Saturday, Feb. 23 through Sun
day, Mar. 3.
Perhaps the highlight of the
show — and one of the most
prestigious events on the Char
lotte social calendar all year —
is the annual benefit Gala. Those
attending have the opportunity
of a private tour after regular
show hours without the usual
crowds and hassle, while enjoy
ing outstanding entertainment
and refreshments.
In addition to viewing the 30
spectacular gardens, 26 dazzling
designer rooms, there will be a
variety of exciting new features.
Visitors will find the gardener'Is
marketplace, educational pro
grams and over 200 professional
art and craft exhibitors to be a
delight.
Featured will be Ruth Fred-
man*s Collector’s Comer from
St. Louis, which specializes in
Israeli art and jewehry. One of
the largest and best in the
country, she is bringing the
outstanding sculpture of Ri
chard Shiloh. Also featured will
be the paintings of Itzchak
Tarkay.
Special entertainment will be
provided at the Gala by Steven
Haas, former soloist at Tempk
Beth El VShalom and opera
star, who is now a cantor in
Miami Beach; VIVA KLEZ-
MER!; the Wood win Trio, the
Newton Thomas Trio, PJ and
Pam, and a strolling violin duo.
The refreshments are donated
by Food Lion and the prepara
tion is being done by Joseph
Falceto of Glorious Cuisine.

In addition, Mann Travels,
along with American Airlines, is
donating two airline tickets to
anywhere in the continental U.S.
The drawing for this will occur
during the Gala.
Each year, the Southern
Spring Show organizers desig
nate a worthy cause in the
community that will benefit
from all ticket sales to this
special night. Organizations that
have benefited from the Gala in
the past include the N.C. Per
forming Arts Center and the
N.C. Zoo.
~A strong show of support for
the event will give the resettle
ment drive a tremendous finan
cial and emotional boost, luid
demonstrate the community's
dedication to the effort,” said
Herman Blumenthal, who is a
cochair with Jane McColl of the
Southern Spring Show Gala
Benefit Committee. **Making it
a success will also show our
cohesiveness in rising to the
challenge of such an important
opportunity.”
“If past Galas are any indica
tion, the local resettlement cam
paign could expect to raise as
much as $50,000 or more with
a strong turnout at this single
fundraising event,” said Emily
2^inmiem, president of the Char
lotte Jewish Federation. “This is
an extraordinary opportunity
for the Jewish community. We
can raise a significant amount of
funds for resettlement and in the
process educate members in the
community about the deteriorat
ing situation in the Soviet Union
for Jews and the international
efforts to resettle them in the
U.S. and Israel.”
An advisory committee of
community members led by
Blumenthal and McColl is hard
at work raising money and
soliciting sponsorships for the
Gala. Another committee,
chaired by Sara Schreibman,
Vicki Hopkins and Cary Bern
stein, is coordinating the cater
ing, public relations, entertain
ment and other event logistics
for the evening.
Each member of the Jewish
community can personally con
tribute to the success of the Gala.
“Of course, the simplest way to
participate is to buy a ticket,”
Schreibman said. “You will
enjoy the evening and will have
the satisfaction of knowing that
you have helped fellow Jews
make their home here. You will
also benefit from a tax deduction
for making a charitable contri
bution.”
Since last summer, the local
resettlement effort has helped
bring in 31 Soviet Jews to
Charlotte. It is part of an inter
national campaign, “Operation
Exodus,'* that is resettling
hundreds of thousands of Jews
from the Soviet Union in the
U.S. and Israel. The local cam
paign has provided virtually
everything the families need:
food, clothing, dental and med
ical care, apartments, English
lessons and assistance in finding
jobs.
Help selling the tickets and
volunteers for the night of the
event are needed. For more
