We can raise a significant amount of funds for resettlement and in the process educate members in the community about the deteriorat ing situation in the Soviet Union for Jews and the international efforts to resettle them in the U.S. and Israel.” An advisory committee of community members led by Blumenthal and McColl is hard at work raising money and soliciting sponsorships for the Gala. Another committee, chaired by Sara Schreibman, Vicki Hopkins and Cary Bern stein, is coordinating the cater ing, public relations, entertain ment and other event logistics for the evening. Each member of the Jewish community can personally con tribute to the success of the Gala. “Of course, the simplest way to participate is to buy a ticket,” Schreibman said. “You will enjoy the evening and will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped fellow Jews make their home here. You will also benefit from a tax deduction for making a charitable contri bution.” Since last summer, the local resettlement effort has helped bring in 31 Soviet Jews to Charlotte. It is part of an inter national campaign, “Operation Exodus,'* that is resettling hundreds of thousands of Jews from the Soviet Union in the U.S. and Israel. The local cam paign has provided virtually everything the families need: food, clothing, dental and med ical care, apartments, English lessons and assistance in finding jobs.
