Railcar at Museum (cont'd from preceding page) The Museum’s railcar is dis tinguished by a guard cabin that extends 30 inches above the roof of the car at the rear. When it was used by the Nazis, an SS guard was stationed in the cabin, armed with a machine gun, on the lookout for anyone trying to jump from the train. The guard cabin generally appeared in every fifth car of the train. During the Holocaust, the Nazis transported millions of people, an overwhelming major ity of them Jewish, to concen tration camps and killing centers through Nazi-occupied Europe. Often the victims traveled for days without fresh air, water, food or sanitation and many of them died en route. Usually 100 more people would be crowded into a win- dowless car. A train often con sisted of 60 cars, which together carried at least 6,000 people. When the Warsaw Ghetto was liquidated in 1942-43, sometimes as many as 12,000 people a day from Warsaw alone were taken to Treblinka on two trains. Thus, a railcar such as the one donated to the Museum could carry between 100 to 200 people a day to their deaths. a n.naaaement a Page 19-THE NEWS-May 1991 Fleishman-Cox Kristin Lynne Cox and Louis Edwin Fleishman were married March 16 at Belk Chapel at Queens College.
