Foremost Holocaust
To Speak at Temple
Expert
Israel
Professor Raul Hilberg, inter
nationally known authority on
the Holocaust, will speak about
the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising at
Temple Israel on Saturday eve
ning, April 10, at 8 p.m. This
program commemorates the
50th anniversary of that event.
It is both fitting and proper
that Dr. Hilberg be in Charlotte
during the holiday of Passover
because it was during Pesach,
fifty years ago, that a small
group of Polish Jews attempted
to fight back against their op
pressors whose goal was the
deliberate and horrific annihila
tion of European Jews.
As a young resident of Vienna
just before the war, Hilberg saw
the ascent of the Third Reich,
and as a soldier in the U.S. Army
from 1944-46, he witnessed its
collapse. As a member of the War

petus to write his three-volume.
The Destruction of the European
Coinmunity to Commetnorate
Yom Hashoah
This year, to commemorate
the Holocaust we turn to the
Second Generation. Each
year the number of survivors
lessens. In order to make sure
that no one ever forgets the
horror of the Holocaust the
children and grandchildren of
the survivors must continue
to speak out. The Jewish
Community Center and the
Charlotte members of the
North Carolina State Com
mission on the Holocaust are
proud to sponsor “Reflec
tions from the Second Gen
eration.” This event will be
held on Sunday, April 18, at
7 p.m. in Gorelick Hall. It is
open to the entire community
and al! ages are encouraged
to attend.
Guest speaker is Jackie
Fishman, daughter of survi
vor, Dr. Susan Cernyak-
Spatz. Jacki'* will speak on
her experiences as the child
of a survivor, her recent tour
of concentration camps with
her mother and her involve
ment with a “Facing History
and Ourselves,” a national
foundation which helps edu
cators raise the conciousness
of junior and senior high
students through an “in depth
study of the Holocaust and
its message for today,”
There will also be a memo
rial candlelighting led by the
children and grandchildren of
local survivors. Each of them
will briefly share their feelings
about being the “Second
Generation.”
It becomes more important
each year to “pass the torch.”
This evening will be Char
lotte’s start toward doing this.
An exhibit of Holocaust
memorabilia and photos col
lected from survivors and
liberators will be on display
in the Speizman Art Galleries
at Shalom Park, March 29
through May 16. Special
tours, led by docents from the
Holocaust Council, may be
arranged by calling Debby
Rosenberger, 366-5007.
Yom Ha’Atzmaut to be Celebrated
Come to Shalom Park on
Sunday, April 25, for a fun-
filled birthday party for Isra
el. There is an exciting sched
ule of events planned for all
ages.
The day will start at 11 :30
a.m. with a four mile solidar
ity walk, h will include the
Sunday School children from
both Temple Israel and Tem
ple Beth El. We hope many
adults will also join this walk
to show unity with the State
of Israel. When everyone
arrives back at Shalom Park
there will be a picnic lunch
available with many Israeli
foods, as well as kosher
franks made to order on the
grills. There will be singing,
dancing and games for the
entire family.
Please rejoin us that eve
ning at 7 p.m. when we will
welcome Mayor Richard Vin-
root. He will share his expe
riences from his recent trip to
Israel as a member of a
national mayors mission. The
evening will conclude with a
coffee and cake reception.
Volunteers to be Honored at
Festive Campaisn Closing
Jews (1961, 1985) and Perpetra
tors, Victims, Bystanders: The
Jewish Catastrophe 1933-1945
(1992). The former of these two
books is considered by most
scholars to be the definitive
study of the Nazi Holocaust.
Professor Hilberg received his
Ph. D. in Public Law and Gov
ernment in 1955. He taught at
the University of Vermont from
1956 until his retirement in 1991.
He is currently Professor Emer
itus in Political Science at the
University of Vermont. Dr.
Hilberg has served as a member
of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial
Council, has been a witness for
the Department of Justice in
cases against individuals impli
cated in the killings, and was
interviewed for the Claude l.anz-
mann classic film on the Holo
caust, “SHOAH.” Professor
Hilberg is currently a member
of the President’s Commission
on the Holocaust. He has lec
tured throughout the world, and
is returning this month from a
visit to Australia.
During this upcoming holiday
of “giving thanks” for our ex
odus from Egypt, let us not
forget those who were unable to
make exodus from Europe prior
to World War II, but perished
at the hands of their oppressors.
Join us at Temple Israel to
hear Raul Hilberg’s public pre
sentation on the Warsaw Ghetto
Uprising and to learn more
about how this small band of
Warsaw Jews’ heroic, yet suicid
al, mission of resistance has
contributed so much to our
dignity during and after this
catastrophic period of our his
tory.
This program is sponsored by
the Temple Israel Adult Educa
tion Committee through the
generosity of Temple Israel
member, Steve Huyser. For

The Jewish Federation of
Greater Charlotte is sponsoring
a campaign closing event sche
duled for the evening of Satur
day, May 1 at the home of Micky
Gold. Gail Kronovet, Campaign
Closing chair, and committee
members Jack Levinson, Dan
Levinson, Phyllis Schiffman,
Lora Solomon and Phil Solom
on are enthusiastic about what
promises to be a fun-filled
evening featuring dancing, food
and drinks. A special tasting has
been graciously donated by
Mama Ricotta’s Pasta and Piz
za.
The event will honor our
volunteers for their efforts in
leading the 1993 Federation
Campaign and Continuation of
Operation Exodus. We should
feel proud in meeting the needs
of Jewish human service organ
izations in Charlotte, Israel and
worldwide.
To date, the Charlotte Jewish
community has raised over 1.1
million dollars for the 1993
Federation Campaign and con
tinues its efforts to meet the 1.5
million goal. For further infor
mation, please call the Federa
tion office, 366-5007.
East Meets West
The White House sent this photo of President Bill Clinton and Israeli
Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin. They held a press conference at which
time they expressed their common objective of turning 1993 into a year
of peacemaking in the Middle East. The CJNwas notifled that President
Clinton is “always interested in reading the newspapers of choice in
Jewish-American communities” and we were asked to put the OfTice
of Media Affairs on our mailing list so they could forward it to the
Executive Office.
