High Holy Days AtBJH Residents at the Blumenthal Jewish Home celebrated the High Holy Days with old tra ditions and new friends. Holi days are observed for two days at BJH with both evening and morning services held in the BJH Synagogue. This season, which is both joyful and solemn, en hances the special quality found in this Jewish Home throughout the year. For the residents it is a time of remembrance, of thankfulness, of hope and of comfort. Residents participate in the traditional holy day services, enjoy the familiar hol iday foods and welcome visits from family and friends. For both newcomers and long time residents, sharing the holidays with others provides a sense of renewal and eases the sorrows of losses. Enjoying the beauty of early fall while sitting in the Home’s beautiful Grand Succah is al ways a highlight of this season. This year’s Succoth Celebration featured a delightful perfor mance by Dan Nichols, Jewish folk and cantoral singer from Durham, North Carolina, and the added treat of holiday sweets served in the Succoth. The residents of BJH are now looking forward to celebrating the holiday of Chanukah. This is a time which the Home is illuminated with the brightness of volunteers lighting Chanukah menorahs each evening in the dining rooms and the glow of the 20-foot sculpture menorah lit in the courtyard. Visitors are welcome to help brighten this holiday by volun teering to assist with candle lighting one evening or enter tainment.
