BJH Volunteers Decrease Distances and Add to Lives By Sue Clein As Director of Volunteers at the Blumenthal Jewish Home, I meet people of all ages, with varied backgrounds and inter ests who all share a common desire. They wish to add a new focus to their lives through giving something of themselves to others. How, when and where this volunteer giving is imple mented varies for each person. Often I have the pleasure of seeing the results expressed through the volunteer’s pleasure or satisfaction in their work, even the discovery of an interest or ability to be pursued. Always, I have the reward of knowing the joy volunteers bring to the residents, through daily activi ties, friendship, special pro grams, through reaching out to give another person a touch of themselves. Volunteers are an important part of the social, emotional, religious and recreational as pects of life for residents at BJ H. The volunteers can be seen daily at the Home. The men, women, children and youth who volun teer at BJH are an invaluable resource to the Home and to those who live there. Not being able to mention each of them, 1 would like to highlight four recent programs, varied in format yet alike in that these caring volunteers shor tened distances, between ages and between cities, to add to people’s lives. Thirty residents of BJH and Fair Oaks ventured out to visit the Dixie Classic Fair in Win ston Salem in October. A “fair” day became a great day filled with sunshine, food and fun thanks to the team effort of staff, student nurses and caring volun teers. Fourteen volunteers who came from Winston-Salem and Greensboro allowed each resi- A Fil Yeskel and his son and daughter chat with BJH resident Virginia Brown following the service. dent to receive a personal escort and guaranteed a great time for everyone. Students and teachers from B’nai Shalom Day School in Greensboro visited the Home in November to entertain for the monthly birthday party. The auditorium was packed with residents who came to enjoy the party, classes of students who came to entertain, and Greens boro volunteers who sponsor the party and make it all happen. The students presented an out standing program of songs in Hebrew and English, enhanced with interpretive movements. This beautiful performance was followed with students serving refreshments and getting to meet the residents. Steve Huyser of Charlotte drives to BJH the third Sunday of the month to present an informal piano concert for the residents, held in the Fair Oaks living room. Sunday afternoons are not lonely days but bright ones when Steve Huyser arrives, bringing a warm smile along with a sparkling performance. Steve also accompanies Rabbi Scott White of Temple Israel at his monthly Rabbi’s Hour for residents, where Steve and Rab bi White present a program of Jewish music. An intergenerational Shabbat service recently held in the BJH Synagogue was sponsored by the Men’s Club of Temple Israel in Charlotte. The service included participation by men, women and children. Residents delight ed in this multi-generational dimension to the regular Shab bat service at the Home. The Kiddush which followed, spon sored by the Men’s Club, pro vided residents and visitors a time to mingle and share Shab bat greetings. A special thank you to Filip Yeskel who coor dinated the visit and to Alan Sussman, who provided the challah and wine for Kiddush, and to all the participants who came to share Shabbat with the residents. Visitors and volunteers are welcome on Shabbat and throughout the week at Blum enthal Jewish Home. Individu als or groups are invited to participate in a service or assist with varied programs. Being a volunteer means giving a little and gaining a lot. For informa tion about participating at BJH call Sue Clein, 910-766-6401.
