Children Go on Imaginary Trip
By Laurie Bober
“Flight 415 will be boarding
in a few minutes.” Airplanes
taking off from the JCC? Not
so unusual if you are a four-year-
old at CJPS. On April 15, these
children took an imaginary trip
to Israel to celebrate Yom
Ha’Atzmaut, Israel Indepen
dence Day. Preparations for the
trip included making their own
money, airline boarding passes,
and passports. The children
dressed in blue and white, and
on the plane sang Israeli songs.
Different cities visited were set
up with different experiential
activities.
In Haifa, the children did
Israeli dancing and in Masada,
the children went on an archae
ological dig. The city of Eilat was
the scene of Israeli story-telling.
On the “street” was the Israeli
marketplace where crafts the
children had made were being
sold. Of course, the children
purchased the items with the
money they had made. There
was also an Israeli cafe where
the children could eat the food
they had also made.
Parents were invited to par
ticipate by volunteering as do
cents, merchants, tour guides
and storytellers. You can just
imagine what a wonderful expe
riential learning situation this
trip was for the children. Learn
ing by doing is the way preschool
children learn, understand and
remember.
