■f’ ^ • .1 • • • „ * • * ^ r • ■••1 TheNewB-July, 199S'Page7 temple Social Action Committee By Joel Goldman Temple Israel’s Social Action Committee recently developed and sent to the entire Congrega tion a survey asking for Temple member input as to the various ways the most meaningful volun teer programs possible can be de veloped by the Committee to meet ISRAEL Dorothy Shapiro community needs. The survey is part of a continuing endeavor to make Temple Israel an important contributor in helping to solve community social needs. On April 24, dinner and baby sitting services were provided for the Florence Crittendon Home. Members of Temple Israel donated their time and effort so that girls in the Crittendon Home could at tend various self-help classes. Giving of their time were Jeff Malickson, Marilyn Roth, Dor othy, Norman, Stuart and Amy Shapiro and Louise Silbiger. On May 22 this volunteer pro gram will be repeated, and it will be a very worthwhile effort. Friday evening services. May 12, will feature a Social Action Shabbat. Temple Israel will recog nize the members of the Commit tee who have contributed to making the Committee programs such a success, and Committee members will participate in the Shabbat services. Rabbi Ezring is working with the Social Action Committee to form a sub-committee whose ob jective will be to establish a rela tionship with the Mecklenburg Ministries involving social events. This will enable Temple Israel to have an even more visible pres ence in the community. Rabbi Ezring, Joel Goldman and Jeff Malickson will be the new sub committee members. Several events are being discussed for the summer, and this type inter-de nominational relationship is a new concept for the temple. The Social Action Commit tee has also agreed to work with Roz Cooper in assisting her with respect to the group called Youth Breaking Barriers. The YBB con sists of teenagers from the 10th through 12th grades, and repre sents both inter-racial and inter denominational high school students. Approximately forty teens will participate in a four day sleep- over and intensive group discus sion program at the JCC. Volunteers will be needed to -act as group facilitators, assisting in the implementation of programs and serving meals. The dates will be from June 12 to the 15. June and July at Temple Israel By Lisa Taub - Temple Israelites extend a proud mazal tov to the confirma tion class of 1995; Goeffrey Binnick, Phillip Cathcart, Aviva Ezring, Daniel Goldberg, Elissa Golembe, Josh Hirsch, Allison Katz, Alexis Kropp, Laura Malickson, Michelle Maslov, Eric Rolnick, and Ariah Yeskel. Confrmands will be honored at services on the first day of Shavuot, June 4. Also in celebration of Shavuot, a special Shavuot dinner will take at Temple Israel on June 3. Yizkor services will be held on June 5. Family Shabbat will be celebrated starting at 6:00 p.m. on June 16.
