The Assistant, by National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winning author Bemard Malamud, will be discussed at Temple Israel’s Monday October 23rd Book Club meeting. The Assistant is the story of Frank Alpine - a man with a troubled past, who comes to work as a helper to a Jewish couple and their attractive daughter, who op erate a failing grocery store in a declining Brooklyn neighborhood. His struggles between the forces of his past and the urge to do the right thing make fascinating reading. The outcome has a definite Jewish theme and makes The Assistant one of the most notable of Temple Israel’s book club selections.T/i^ Assistant is available at the public library, the Speizman Jewish Li brary and at book stores for under $5. Book club meetings are held at Temple Israel from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and are open to all members of the Jewish community. “Drop in’s” are welcome.
