The Charlotte Jewish News - October, 1995 - Page 4 Jewish Family Services /TcC^UeH*te Adrienne Rosenberg JFS Director Recently I read that the local United Way office is changing the way they are handling the alloca tion of monies. Rather than stick ing with the traditional funding of agencies, they are looking instead at the question: What IMPACT does this agency have on people’s lives? Does the fact that an agency receives United Way dollars mean they will help people? This month the Jewish Family Services Board will submit its 1996 Budget to Federation along with an annual request for funding. In 1995 approximately 580 of the JFS Bud get will come from Federation. The remainder of the monies must come from client fees, donations, grants, and the annual Friends Campaign. What would happen if the Al locations Committee of Federation asked JFS the same questions United Way is asking? What if in stead of allocating dollars merely because an agency had always had been allocated money, the only question was, “What IMPACT did your agency have on people’s lives?” This would be very easy for JFS to answer. Ours is an agency that individuals, families, and the community call on when they are having problems. No area of people’s personal problems are out of reach for the agency to respond. People and the community call on JFS because they are experiencing stress, when they are unemployed, when they are having marital prob lems, when family members need help, where there are flnancial con cerns and needs, when they are de pressed, when they can no longer take care of themselves, when they are thinking of making life changes, and on and on. JFS serves all ages and socio—economic status re gardless of affiliations or member ships. We could easily assure the Federation Allocations Committee that money given to JFS does make an IMPACT on people’s lives in a meaningful way. JFS has a profes sional staff of 2 and 3/4. In 1994 there were 908 office visits and 321 home visits for a monthly average total case load of 98. In addition there were 165 persons served in group settings and V91 contacts serving 451 persons for short-term reasons where cases were not open. This does not include speaking en gagements, consultations by other professionals, or meetings in either the Jewish or non-Jewish commu nity. This does not include tele phone calls, contacts on behalf of clients with other professionals, social agencies or family mem bers—all of which take consider able time during the day for each worker. In 1995 all of the social workers caseloads are larger than last year with more and more per sons turning to JFS for help. This is the first year in several when JFS was not actively involved with Rus sian resettlement. Yes, JFS does make an IM PACT on the lives of those we serve! We can be called on to HELP anyone Jewish who has a problem. The agency services are on a sliding fee scale with no one turned away because of inability to pay. We make a difference in the lives of the Charlotte Jewish com munity. The JFS Board and Staff can definitely attest to that! CAROLINA MARKING DEVICES, INC. P.O. BOX 32143 3^05 S.
