Commissioner's
Comment
By
Lloyd Scher
For the second time in the his
tory of Mecklenburg County, a
County Commission meeting is be
ing postponed for a Jewish holiday
Last year, in a close 4 to 3
vote, the County Commission de
feated a motion to change the meet
ing scheduled for Rosh Hashanah.
While setting the meetings for the
entire year, I had asked to change a
September meeting that fell on Rosh
Hashanah. I was stunned to hear the
comments from some of my fellow
Commissioners. One Commissioner
said that I should choose either to
attend the meeting or miss it com
pletely.
Even though the issue this
year was the same, a new Commis
sion was to make the decision. At
our calendaring session, the meet

readily changed. I explained that the
Commission should not meet bn

step toward the world class city that
we believe Charlotte to be. It is im
portant that civic leaders understand
that all religions and their holy days
are respected. Our govemment rep
resents people of all faiths.
For years I have heard
about schools that give tests or hold
PTA meetings during the High Holi
days. This year I have noticed that
no meetings are scheduled. There
should also be no tests given by any
teachers, and if this occurs, please
call me. I will bring this to the at
tention of the appropriate school
officials. In small ways we are
gradually educating the public and
our elected oflficials.
