Rich Osborne-President
Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte
The new year promises to be
momentous in many ways. There
will be a special meeting of the mem
bership of Federation the evening of
Monday, November 20th. This
meeting will consider the restructur
ing proposal developed by the Task
Force chaired by Mark Bernstein.
This proposal will create an entity
to own and manage the physical park
facility, the Foundation for Shalom
Park. Federation then will be able
to focus on community planning,
fundraising and resource allocation.
This new organization is proposed
to take effect on January 1.
After careful consideration.
Executive Conmiittee of Federation
recommended and the Board ap
proved directing the Allocations
Committee to allocate $475,000 to
United Jewish Appeal This repre
sents about a 5 percent increase firom
the allocation made this year but re
mains substantially below the
$536,000 allocated to UJA in 1994.
UJA continues to fund a criti
cal part of the needs of Israel. Along
with other Jews in the Diaspora,
UJA substantially underwrites the
resettlement costs associated with
moving Jews from the former So
viet Union, Syria and other threat
ened locations. Moreover, UJA pro
vides about 18 percent of the social
services in the State of Israel itself,
including Youth Aliyah Villages and
elder-care. The Board felt very good
that the increase in the annual cam
paign in 1995 enabled it to direct
Allocations Committee to increase
our support of these worthwhile
causes.
A bit closer to home, the next
generation of community leaders
launched into the new year with a
terrific party at Gorelick Hall. New
Federation Generation held a casino
night on October 14. co-chairs
Debra and David Van Glish and
Janice and A1 Nalibotaky spear
headed this event, with a lot of help
from Staff Associate Vicki Hopkins
and a number of surprisingly skilled
dealers, croupiers and pit-crews re
cruited from the “Not so New Fed
eration Generation.”
The kickoff events of the 1996
campaign are almost upon us. Bob
Speizman, chair of the Major Divi
sion for Men’s Campaign (King
David Society for $25,000 and
above, and President’s Council for
$10,000 to $24,999) and Bobbi
Bernstein, chair of the Lions of
Judah Division for Women’s Cam
paign ($5000 and above) plan a
kickoff event for those divisions the
evening of Tuesday, November 28.
This is followed on December 8-9
with UJA Shabbat maiidng the kick-
off of the general campaign.
I know that 1 speak for Bob,
Bobbi, our campaign chair and vice
chair, Bin Gorelick and Jill Newman,
and all those committed to working
in the campaign in asking for your
support and participation in the
forthcoming Federation annual cam
paign. The results of your past gen
erosity is everywhere in our schools
and playgrounds, at the Blumenthal
Home in Clemmons, at Youth Aliyah
Villages in Israel. For your past sup
port, we are greatly appreciative.
