A festive crowd of senior adults,*
accompanied by their adult chil
dren (and even some grandchil
dren), gathered at the JCC on
Sunday, January 10, 1999. The
occasion was to welcome the
latest addition to the Jewish
Community Center’s expanding
senior adult program — a pur
pose-built passenger van. The van,
air-conditioned, spacious and
adorned with the JCC logo, is the
result of several significant dona
tions by community members.
Evelyn Berger, event Chairperson
was on hand to offer thanks to
those who gave so generously and
to offer her thoughts regarding the
important role transportation plays
in combating isolation among
seniors.
The dedication of the vehicle
was led by Susan Jacobs, Director
of the JCC’s Programs for Jewish
Living. Following this everyone
enjoyed music provided by Martin
Travis & Friends with their “Big
Band” sound. Scott Menaker, JCC
Board President, was also on hand
to launch Transport 2000 - the
goal of which is to raise funds for
an additional vehicle. To jump-
start the fundraising effort
Leonard and Evelyn Berger pre
sented a check for one thousand
dollars. “We are exU-emely grate
ful to all those individuals who
helped purchase this wonderful
vehicle and both Leonard and I
want to make sure Transport 2000

In his remarks Scott Menaker
said “the JCC looks forward to a
similar event next year when we
dedicate another new vehicle that
will help bring seniors to our
doorstep.” He continued
“this dedication represents a
milestone for the Jewish
Community Center of
Charlotte. It reinforces that
senior adult programming is
a priority, which, along with
the launch of Transport 2000
and our recent grant from the
United Way of Central

Multi-Million Dollar Effort
Launched to Increase Jewish
Continuity through
Camping
NEW YORK - Responding to
the Jewish communal effort to
ensure continuity, a new foundation
will boldly serve as a catalyst for
resources to expand and improve
Jewish overnight camps in North
America.
‘The new Foundation for Jewish
Camping (FFJC) seeks to invigo
rate camping both in the United
States and Canada and across every
denomination,” says Rabbi Ramie
Arian, executive director of the
New York City-based organization.
Philanthropists Robert Bildner
and Elisa Spungen Bildner of
Montclair, New Jersey and the
Bildner family have made an extra
ordinary commitment of $2 million
to endow FFJC and to fund the
organization’s expenses in its inau
gural years. The Bildner gift will
serve as the keystone for more sub
stantial fundraising: The
Foundation seeks an additional $20
million from other funding sources.
This spring, FFJC will announce
its first grants, making available
more than $225,000 for programs
to improve Jewish camps across
North America. Grants will be used
to increase camp capacity, strength
en the recruitment and training of
camp staff, improve camp pro
grams, encourage community lay
leaders to promote Jewish camping
and provide scholarships for
Jewish campers.
“Jewish camping works,” says
Elisa Spungen Bildner. “Our chil
