New Building at Jewish
Preschool on Sardis
A wonderful new year awaits
the students at The Jewish
Preschool on Sardis! In addition to
the excitement of starting school
and getting to know new teachers
and classmates, the children have
the distinction of being the first
ones in our newly constructed
building. The one-level facility
has ten classrooms, ranging in size
from 500 to 880 square feet. Each
classroom has built-in cabinets,
shelves, counters, child- friendly
surfaces, and at least one bath
room. One room functions as a
lunchroom, and another one is
used as a multipurpose room.
Administrative offices are also

The new team, and our student
leadership, will be moving into
our new facility sometime this
fall. The excitement is growing as
the new facility takes shape. As
our vision for the new building
becomes reality, plan.*; are under
way for greatly enhanced Jewish
programming that the new build
ing will allow for. It is hoped that
the new NC Hillel facility will
serve as a campus JCC for those
students interested in Jewish life
— whether on a religious, educa
tional, cultural or purely social
level. Watch for news about the
dedication/celebration, and please

Happenings at Congregation Ohr
HaTorah
located in the building. The new
courtyard is the ideal place for the
children to enjoy our many riding
toys and trikes. Additional equip
ment has been added to the
preschool playground, and a new
toddler playground is on the draw
ing board, thanks to the generosity
of Tracy and Larry Brown.
Of course, the most important
part of the preschool experience
occurs inside those beautiful new
classrooms when outstanding staff
members provide fun-filled activi
ties and create valuable learning
opportunities.
What lucky children! They
have the newest and the best!
In an effort to acconmiodate the
growing number of families who
attend Congregation Ohr
HaTorah, additional members
have been added to the board of
directors. Phyllis Kerendian and
Lisa Shporer have joined the
existing board. The previous
appointed members are Michael
Molinari - President, David
Cantor - Vice President &
Treasurer, Dr. Eric Laxer -
Secretary, Dr. Selwyn
Spangenthal and Dr. Ellis Tavin.
The Shul board has made a com
mitment to serve the members and
patrons of Ohr HaTorah and will
work with a goal to continue the
enhancement of the congregation.
One of the modes of involving
all of the congregants is the suc
cessful monthly breakfasts, as
they have become vehicles
through which issues are intro
duced and discussed.
Congregation Ohr HaTorah is
an Orthodox synagogue sponsored
by Lubavitch in Charlotte and is
open to all those who seek a tradi
tional or Orthodox style of wor
ship. Recent synagogue events
have drawn people closer together
and have become expressive of
the rejuvenation of traditional and
Orthodox Judaism in the commu
nity. Shavuot and Lag B’omer
were a big draw for families and
singles.
On Shabbat July 1, a festive
Kiddush luncheon was held to say
goodbye to a long time senior
member of the synagogue, Louis
“Leibish” Doctor who moved up
to New York to reside with his son
Abraham in Staten Island. It was a
moving experience to hear so
many people express their senti
ments honoring this wonderful
human being. After being prompt
ed by one of his friends, Mr.
Doctor stood up and recited some
Jewish-German poetry he had
memorized during his military
service in WWII. All of us wish
him well in his new life in the Big
Apple.
Construction of the new build
ing on Sardis Road is progressing
very well. Excitement is climbing
both by staff of the preschool as
well as by the parents of the
preschoolers. The expected date
for opening the new facility is
mid-August. The grand opening
ceremony is scheduled for
September 6 at 7:00 PM.
The new facility will feature
many new state of the art class
rooms as well as much needed
assembly space. Lubavitch will
also use a small part of the facility
to house its synagogue Ohr
HaTorah in the interim. A larger
sanctuary and social hall is
planned for the future. ^
