The Charlotte Jewish News - August 2001 - Page 17 Foundation of Shalom Park Completes First Phase of Expansion Camp Mindy Celebrates Grand Opening Sunday, June 3, was a “really great day at the J!” More than 200 visitors joined in the celebration ol the official opening of the Mindy Kllen Levine Day Camp tit the Jewish Comimmity Center of Charlotte, tin expansion project of The Foundtition of Shtiloni Park. The highlight of the ceretnonics was an tmnouncenient by conitnu- nity phihinthropist Leon Levine that he tmd inenibcrs of his fatnily - his wife Sandra, dtiughter Lori and husband Jiric Sklut, and son Howard and his wife Julie Lcvitie, tuid dtiughter Amy - would assure a bright future for the new day camp by collectively adding ,$1 million to the Mindy Kllen I.evine Day Camp Kndowment Ihind. The surprise announcement was greeted by an etithusiastic response from the gathered crowd. Jewish Community Center President, Lane Ostrow expressed his gratitude to the Levine and Sklut fatnilies and thanked them for their ongoing commitment. “You all have set a wonderful example for quite some time. With the additional generosity of setting up this endowment today, you secure the future of the Camp and agaiti raised the bar for this com munity. Thanks for the today's gift and for till you have done to make this a great place to have grown tip, and more importantly, a great place to raise our Jewish chil dren.” And the surprises kept on com ing. In recognition of his unher alded work and leadership in the Charlotte Jewish community, Lori Sklut delivered a warm and touch ing tribute to her husband, Kric, announcing that she dedicating the Camp Mindy Administration Building in his name. Included among the long list of Eric's dedi cated communal leadership involvements are: serving as President of the Jewish Community Center; co-chairman of the Koimdation of Shtilom Park Building Committee; member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Central Carolinas and, presently, serving as Campaign Chairman for the most successful annual fund raising ef fort in the history of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte. Going forward the facility will now be known as the “Eric Sklut Administration Building.” The finale of surprise announcements ctinie from Sandra Levine who informed the audi ence that she was dedicating the camp’s new outdoor recreation area in memory of her parents. From now on. this facility will now be called the “Dorothy and Herman Poliakoff Athletic Pavillion.” Jewish Community Center Executive Director Alan Feldman summed it up by saying, “Camp Mindy offers us an incredible array ol facilities that enhance our ability to provide quality program ming experiences. The unparal leled generosity of the Levine and Sklut families is both a reflection of their communal mindedness and an investment in the future of our institution.
