The Last Night at
the Ballyhoo
November 30-December 16,
Charlotte Repretory
Theatre, Booth Playhouse
j
One of the Rep’s most beloved works of the
last decade returns with its message of compas
sion, this time for the holiday season. This
recent Best Play Tony Award winner is set in
Atlanta in 1939. It’s Christmas, Gone with the
Wind is having its premiere, and Hitler is invad
ing Poland, but the Freitag household, one of
the city’s prominent Jewish families, is much
more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo,
the social event of the season. Lala’s heart is set
on it, but she doesn’t have a date, and when her
popular cousin Sunny is suddently
invited by a dynamic visitor from
the north, it sets off a competition
with unexected revelations. Alfred
Uhry, the noted author of Driving
Miss Daisy, has created a colorful
family of eccentrics who manage
to be both funny and touching, and
who show us all much about dis
crimination and acceptance, past
and present. O
Bette Midler sang it better than
anybody: “You gotta have
friends!” I remember singing that
with my college friends, our arms
draped around each other, an open
carton of Jamocha Almond Fudge
and four spoons on the floor
between us.
It’s still true today. Everyone
needs friends. It seems that close
ties are what is helping the fami
lies of the September 11 tragedy to
cope with their losses. Studies
show that people with family,
friends and religious affiliations
have a smaller chance of develop
ing stress-related diseases. And
while sometimes 1 find it pleasant
to run, go to a restaurant, or see a
movie all by myself, there’s some
thing to be said for the company of
a good friend.
Even big entities need friends.
Without the generosity of our
friends in the Jewish community
and the community at large, the
agencies in Shalom Park would
never be able to function as they
do. Your generous contributions to
the Federation, to the Foundation
campaign, to Jewish Family
Services, to the Endowment Funds
and other funds of your syna
gogues, as well as the many funds
at the Jewish Community Center
are a valuable part of life in
Shalom Park.
And I know you have all been
generous to a fault. You might
think that this would deter me
from asking for your help one
more time. But The Charlotte
Jewish News needs your help now.
