Adult Education
The Adult Education
Committee of Temple Israel is
pleased and honored to announce
that Sanford P. Benjamin, M.D.
will discuss the matter of Jewish
Genetic Diseases, on January 17,
2002 at Temple Israel at 8:00 PM.
Dr. Benjamin is a native of
Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated
from Ohio State University
(Columbus, Ohio) with a Bachelor
of Science degree in Biology and
received his Medical Doctorate at
Wayne State University College of
Medicine (Detroit, Michigan)
followed by a year of Internal
Medicine training at Saint
Joseph’s Medical Center (Phoenix,
AZ). Dr. Benjamin returned home
for his Pathology and Laboratory
Medicine training, completing a
Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic
Hospital. Following a two-year
tour of duty with the United States
Air Force at Maxwell Air
Force Base Regional Hospital
(Montgomery, Alabama), he
joined the Medical Staff of the
Cleveland Clinic of the
Department of Pathology and
Laboratory Medicine. Dr.
Benjamin, his wife Lois, their
daughter, Robyn, and son, Lee
moved to Charlotte in 1978. Dr.
Benjamin has been a member of
the Medical Staff of Mercy
Hospital since 1978, Chairman of
the Department of Pathology, and
Medical Director of Laboratories
at Mercy Hospital since 1985, and
current President-Elect of the
Mercy Hospital Medical Staff. He
Dr. Sanford Benjamin
is the author of thirty-six articles in
peer-reviewed national medical
journals and principal author of a
textbook of Orthopedic Pathology.
His community participation has
included various activities in
behalf of Temple Israel, Juvenile
Diabetes Foundation, Mercy
Hospital Foundation, and the
Quality Care and Comfort
Committee of the Carolinas
Healthcare System. Personal inter
ests are varied and include virtual
ly all outdoor activities, jazz,
art-deco, reading, (especially
Grisham, Cook, Turow, and
Trevanian), and gardening.
Dr. Benjamin notes that the
invitation to discuss Genetic
Illnesses in the Jewish population
presents a challenge in terms of
both context and perspective. He is
looking forward to sharing both
facts and opinions on this subject
with members of the Charlotte
community. This lecture is free and
open to the entire community. A
dessert reception will follow. ^

Bee Season by Myla Goldberg
Monday, December 10, 7:45 PM
AT Temple Israel
Myla Goldberg’s Bee Season is
the story of how the transforma
tion of “ordinary, mediocre” Eliza
into a nationally recognized
spelling prodigy affects a modem
Jewish family, with its facade of
contentment and normalcy.
Amusing and gripping, the book
touches on Jewish mysticism, the
Hare Krishna movement and the
quest for community and a higher
- perhaps dangerous - level of spir-
