This award, established at the 1998 ICC Maccabi Games hosted in Charlotte and named in memory of an out standing leader and gentle man from our Charlotte Jewish community, is pre sented annually to a member of the Charlotte JCC Maccabi Games delegation who demonstrates tremen dous fortitude despite adver sity and who displays the perseverance to achieve goals that appear unattain able. Previous winners have included: Matt Manes, Mitchell Gartner and Brett Strumwasser. Courtney, a 10th grader at Providence High School, has been a member of the Charlotte JCC Maccabi Games delegation since she was a 12-year-old rookie at the 1998 Games hosted here in Charlotte. She has participated in each following year of eligibility (Houston 1999, Boca Raton, FL 2000 and Atlanta 2001). If Courtney chooses to particijjate in next year’s 20th anniversary set of Games in Memphis (her last year of age-eligibility), she would become the first-ever 5-year JCC Maccabi Games participant from Team Charlotte. When asked why she so enjoys participating each summer at the JCC Maccabi Games, Courtney replied “it is a great way to meet other Jewish teens from all over the world, a chance to play my favorite sport (basketball) and an opportunity to experience a differ ent city each summer. I can be myself and just have fun at the JCC Maccabi Games.” Courtney is the daughter of Sandy and Alan Rosenberg, both JCC Board members and longtime active members of the Charlotte Jewish community. MBA as a chapter sent nine freshman to this convention, and from what I hear, there have been no complaints. Our chapter set up a lot of business meetings and pro grams to get ready for the conven tion, Winter Cultural, which was held in Charlotte. At Winter Cultural all the chapters from North Carolina Council competed in chapter song, banner, t-shirt, basketball and many other con tests. MBA did a car wash to raise money, played three-on-three bas ketball, held planning meetings for Winter Cultural and many of our members volunteered at Israeli Family Fun Day. If anyone would like to get involved in BBYO or get his or her son/daughter into BBYO, contact Ellen Goldstein at the JCC.
