We also have a microfilm reader in-house for one-stop learning and research. The actual microfilming work was done gratis in a collaborative project by the NC State Library and Archives in Raleigh. The Library is committed to including in its collections, community newspapers and local publications of historic interest. When it became evident that the CJN was not already part of its archives, there was much interest in acquir ing the issues of the newspaper for microfilming for archival purposes. Made possible by the Arts & Science Council of Charlotte/Mecklenburg, Inc. grant in the 2000-2001 fiscal year, which enabled CAJE to add a part-time archivist to the staff for the dura tion of the grant, all the original issues of the CJN were processed and sent on to Raleigh for micro filming. Most of the original news papers were donated to CAJE by Rita Mond, the founding editor of the CJN. The remaining issues were duplicated from existing files or came from the current archive of the CJN maintained by Amy Donations to CAJE in Memory of Herman Blumenthal The following donations were received during November 2001: In memory of Herman Blumenthal and in grateful appre ciation of his dedication to Jewish education in Charlotte by the Advisory Board of the Consolidated High School of ■■ ■■ — ■" T ■ ■ Do You Remember When? Groundbreaking of the Amity Club on Sharon Amity Road in 1949. According to author Morris Speizman in his hook The Jews of Charlotte: “Ground for the Amity Club was purchased ... shortly after World War II, with the original plan of having a place for the Jewish War Veterans... to gather with their families, play tennis and picnic. It quick ly developed into a ‘Southern style Jewish country club’: a building with a restaurant, card rooms, two outdoor handball courts, and a swimming pool. It also included (in a total of about 19 acres) a baseball diamond and play area. Much later on, tennis courts were added. ” The Amity Club opened in 1950 and was the hub of Jewish social life until 1974 when the club’s interests were turned over into the current Jewish Community Center.
