To kick-off the Jewish Federation’s 2002 Annual Campaign, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the psychosexual therapist who helped pioneer the field of media psychology, will speak at 7:45 PM at Temple Israel. According to event co-chair Stacy Gorelick, “We are anticipating a sell-out for this event. Dr. Ruth spoke engagingly on behalf of the Memphis Federation in October on a Monday evening to a ‘stand ing room only’ crowd.” Dr. Ruth Westheimer’s radio program, Sexually Speaking, began in September of 1980 as a fifteen minute, taped show that aired Sundays after midnight on NBC in New York. One year later it became a live, one-hour show airing at 10 PM on which Dr. Ruth, as she became known, answered call-in questions from listeners. Soon distributing Dr. Westheimer’s expertise became part of a communication network, which includes television, books, newspapers, games, home video, computer software and a page on the Worldwide Web. Bom in Germany in 1928, Dr. Westheimer was sent at the age of ten to a school in Switzerland, which became an orphanage for most of the German Jewish stu dents who had been sent there to escape the Holocaust. At 16 she went to Israel, where she fought for that country’s independence as a member of the Haganah, the Jewish freedom fighters. She then moved to Paris where she studied at the Sorbonne and taught kinder garten. She immigrated to the United States in 1956 where she obtained her Masters Degree in Sociology from the Graduate Faculty of the New School of Social Research. In 1970, she received a Doctorate of Education in the Interdisciplinary Study of the Family from Columbia University. She worked for Planned Parenthood for a time, and it was that experience that prompted her to further her education in human sexuality by studying under Dr. Helen Singer Kaplan at New York Hospital-Comell University Medical Center. She later partici pated in the program for five years as Adjunct Associate Professor. She has also taught at Lehman College, Brooklyn College, ■Adelphi Unviersity, Columbia Unviersity and West Point. Currently Dr. Westheimer is an Adjunct Professor at N.Y.U. She is a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and in addition to having her own private Dr. Ruth Westheimer practice, Dr. Westheimer leads regular seminars on adolescent sexuality for residents and interns. She frequently lectures at univer sities across the country and has twice been named “College Lecturer of the Year.” During her days as a college professor. Dr. Westheimer never envisaged that one day she would be making such wide use of the mass media to help spread what she has labeled “sexud literacy.” However, with her unique style, she has been able to communicate effectively through almost every avenue available. In addition to radio, her television career has spanned both broadcast and cable, in the United States and in Europe. She even donned the title of Executive Producer for a docu mentary on Ethiopian Jews titled “Surviving Salvation,” which aired nationally on PBS. Her syndicated newspaper col umn Ask Dr. Ruth circles the globe, and she is the author of nineteen books. A book signing will follow the February 5 pro gram, during which time Dr. Ruth will sign three of her books - Rekindling Romance for Dummies, Grandparenthood, and Heavenly Sex, which describes sex in the Jewish tradition. These books will be available in the Federation office for anyone wish ing to purchase them in advance. Dr. Ruth has two children and three grandchildren, and was named “Mother of the Year” by the National Mother’s Day Committee. She has been awarded numerous medals for her achieve ments, and in May 2000, she received an Honorary Doctorate from Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion for her work in Human Sexuality and for her commitment to the Jewish People, Israel and Religion.
