The Charlotte Jewish News - February 2002 - Page 14 Temple Israel News Temple Israel Book Club Best Contemporary Jewish Writing Edited by Michael Lerner Monday, March 11, 2002 at 7:45 PM ^‘We’re ready for our close-up noWy Mr. De Mille.” Miriam Aniel and Lara Schewitz brush up on their repertoire in preparation for Temple Israel's Chanukah concert and sing-a-long at the Stonecrest fountain. Participants included the Junior Choir, Adult Choir, Youth Band and the congregational family as well as many other guests. "I have tilted towards writers who might contribute to the heal ing and transformation that our planet and our community so badly need.” The selection crite ria, so aptly explained by the edi tor, Rabbi Michael Lerner, is cer tainly timely and compelling for today’s challenging times. Rabbi Lerner may be better known as the editor of the magazine “Tikkun.” His anthology includes great fic tion, poetry, social analysis and spiritual insight. Contributors are such renowned writers as Philip Roth. Marge Piercy, Senator Joseph 1. Lieberman, Adrienne Rich and William Safire, as well as newcomers. The material pre sented covers the years 1994- 2000. The book is divided into sec tions: “The Many Identities of a Jew Reclaiming the Spirit in Judaism Rereading Sacred Texts of Our Tradition,” “Living in the Shadows of the Holocaust,” “Israel in Conflict,” and “The Pleasure of Jewish Culture.” Perhaps each participant will con centrate on a favorite section, making for an engaging, entertain ing discussion at the March 11 book club meeting. Best Contemporary Jewish Writing is available at the public library and the Speizman Jewish Library, or may be purchased at the local book stores and on line for about $17.
