Celebrating Chanukah
with the Carriage Club
On the third night of Chanukah
a group of nine excited young girls
between the ages of 9-11 visited
the Carriage Club on Old
Providence Road to cele
brate the miracle of
Chanukah together with 30
Jewish residents.
The girls had been look
ing forward to this evening
when they would be singing
songs and playing games
with the residents.
The residents were
warmly welcomed with a
smile into the colorful din
ing room that had been fes
tively decorated by the girls
themselves.
Residents of the Carriage Club enjoy
Chanukah Jingo.
Everyone watched as the meno-
rah was being lit, and then every
one joined in together singing
Maoz Tzur.
The highlight of the night was
when the girls, all dressed in white
blouses and black skirts, sang
Chanukah songs, accentuated with
body and hand motions.
In between the
songs, they stopped to
assist the residents in
playing a Chanukah
Jingo game.
What’s a Chanukah
party without latkes?
While everyone
enjoyed the delicious
hot latkes and apple
sauce, the girls contin
ued to entertain the residents with
their sweet voices - it didn’t take
long before the audience joined in
singing and clapping along with
the girls.
“You girls don’t even realize
how happy and thankful we are
that you all came to perform and

celebrate with us,” one of the resi
dents emotionally remarked.
“It’s a big mitzvah,” added
another.
The children greet the residents after their per
formance.
“I really had fun playing that
Chanukah Jingo game. It was a
good review of its history and
miracle for me,” said a happy
resident as she hugged and
kissed one of the girls.
At the end of the evening,
the girls stayed to socialize and
to have pictures made with the
residents.
Thanks to the girls, the resi
dents left the room with huge
smiles on their faces.
“Can we come again?” the
girls anxiously asked. They are
already planning the agenda for
the next time they visit the
Carriage Club.
The girls who participated
were: Ella Caplan, Sharon Eshet,
Deborah Farber, Sarah Massachif
Chava Quinn, Rachel Spangenthal,
Bracha Weiss, Kaitlin Laxer and
Rochel Weiss. ^
In a move that is certain to
inspire others to follow, Michael
and Jody Molinari contributed
$20,000 to the annual fund at the
Jewish Preschool on Sardis. The
gift came at the conclusion of last
year as an expression of support
and gratitude to the preschool for
its excellent service to the
Charlotte Jewish community.
Both of the Molinari’s children
are graduates of the Jewish
Preschool on Sardis. Jody serves
on the preschool’s financial advi
sory committee, and Michael is
president of Congregation Ohr
HaTorah.
The Jewish Preschool on Sardis
has earned a fabulous reputation
in Charlotte as a preschool that
provides unsurpassed quality edu
cation for the very young. Close to
150 students are enrolled in the
preschool.
In addition to the revenue
raised from tuition, parents and
friends help with many fundrais
ing efforts including the annual
fund. The Jewish Preschool on
Sardis is also a recipient of funds
from the Jewish Federation of
Greater Charlotte. ^

Dreidels with Dads at The Jewish
Preschool on Sardis
The annual “Dreidels with
Dads” at the Jewish Preschool on
Sardis was a big success. Every
child had an adult in the classroom
that morning, and the adults, had
as much fun as the kids did. There
were art projects and playtime
activities available for everyone.
Daddies and Mommies were on
the floor and at the sand table,
cooking and painting with their
children. Chanukah centers made
every classroom festive. Visitors
could make latkes, dig for dreidels
in the dirt, catch a latke in a pan,
follow directions for lighting can
dles on a menorah, eat a menorah,
make cookie cutter prints or do
Chanukah sponge art. One father,
who took off half a day from work
to spend time with both his sons at
preschool, said he wants to devote
a whole day to the boys next year.
Another Dad wore his “play
clothes” rather than a suit and tie
to work because he wanted to
participate fully in painting with
his daughter. Clearly this tradition
is much loved by preschool fami
lies. ^

Registration for 2002-2003 at The Jewish
Preschool on Sardis
As the year 2001 turned to
2002, registration began for the
Jewish Preschool on Sardis. For
children currently enrolled and
their siblings, application and fees
were due January 2-11. Parents
received a registration packet in
December. For children on the
waiting list, materials were
processed January 14-16.
Registration opened to the com
munity on January 17.
The Jewish Preschool on Sardis
has classes for one-four year olds,
plus a Transitional Kindergarten
program.
Preschool is from 9:00 AM -
1:00 PM. The one-year-olds’ class
is two days a week; the two-year-
olds’ class is three days a week;
and the three-year-old, four-year-
old, and TK classes are five days a
week. New this year are two
items: 1) one-year-olds must be 18
months of age by 9/1/02; and 2)
JPS is assessing parents interest in
a Tuesday/Thursday program and
a Monday through Friday program
for two year olds.

Jewish Preschool on Sardis, 6619

Library Fines
(Continued from page 10)
limit of $10, will continue to use
the library because they were
given a second chance.
The librarian’s main goal is to
see the books off the shelves. We
want every user to enjoy our col
lection and expand their horizons.
You can help us by returning
books by the due-date or call us to
renew the book. When books are
overdue we send notices. It
requires time to write the address
and our expenses on postage and
envelopes are growing.
The money from the fines col
lected in the pasr will be used to
buy prizes for the students who
participate in the reading incentive
program. The highest fines accu
mulated in the Speizman Jewish
Library was $75. We began the
year 2002 with a clean slate for
everyone. We forgive the fines of
the past and hope that you will
help us make library books avail
able to everyone.
We thank our new volunteer.
Myrtle Goldstein, for her help in
sending notices and recording it.
We acknowledge with gratitude
the following donation to the
library funds. These gifts make it
possible to expand the collection
and continue to serve the commu
nity at large. O
