Happen in Jewish Homes -
Does It?”
Desert, photo by Chanan Getraide.
Please feel free to contact Fania
or Nathaniel Greenwood if you
need more information on this
project at 704-'563-2803. O
We were always taught to
believe that domestic violence
doesn’t happen in Jewish homes.
Sadly, the truth is quite the oppo
site. Take a quick look at some sta
tistics and facts from Jewish
Women International:
“Domestic violence does hap
pen in Jewish families. Studies
estimate that 15 to 20 percent of
Jewish women are abused, a rate
comparable to that of non-Jewish
women. There are no denomina
tional differences, either — the
rate of violence is the same among
Orthodox, Conservative, and
Reform Jews.
“What is different about
domestic violence in the Jewish
community is that Jewish women
hesitate longer than non-Jews to
ask for help? The Coalition on
Domestic Violence in the
Cleveland Jewish Community,
spearheaded by JWI, distributed
approximately 24,000 surveys and
received over 400 responses.
Although the women' who
responded to the survey self-
selected, the results are still
revealing. While 72 percent indi
cated that they had experienced
some kind of abuse, less than half
sought help for the problem. Only
39 (15.1%) went to Jewi.sh agen
cies for aid. Even fewer went to
rabbis for help — only 28
(10.9%).
“Jewish women do not come
forward, in part, because it is not
clear that the community will sup
port them. The premise that a
Jewish husband would never harm
his wife or children has been so
widely accepted that reports of
abuse by Jewish men are usually
met with disbelief. For years,
when confronted with alleged
cases of spouse abuse, many pre
ferred to hide behind the reassur
ing stance that ‘it doesn’t happen
in Jewish families.’”
There are many families who
are devastated by domestic vio
lence. Spouses who are afraid to
seek help, children whose lives are
damaged by the abuse that spirals
and continues beneath the surface
of the appearance of family unity.
While our Jewish tradition teaches
us the sanctity of the family, the
need for husbands and wives to
care lovingly and tenderly for one
another, the value of parents rais
ing their children with gentle and
nurturing care, the reality is that
there are many Jewish families in
which these values are ignored.
Physical and emotional abuse is a
serious and pervasive problem,
which tears at the very core of our
community, the family.
Thankfully, there are places
people can turn. More and'more,
people know that they can turn to
their synagogues for support, as
part of the “Sanctuary” programs
recently begun. And our Jewish
Family Service is now beginning a
group for women who have been
the victims of dome.stic violence.
This important program is open to
anyone, and will provide a safe,
confidential and supportive
environment for women to get
help. For more information, or to
make a referral, please contact
Carol Sandler at the Jewish
Family Services office, 704-364-
