The Charlotte Jewish News - March 2002 - Page 5 Lion of Judah: Hear Us Roar The Women’s Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte honored its Lion of Judah donors at a luncheon on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at the Duke Mansion. Author Gloria Goldreich enlightened us with her talk on “A Novel Approach: Jewish Fiction and Jewish History.” We were educated by her quick wit and humor. This year we are proud to announce that we have three new Lions in our den: Jody Molinari, Donna Levin and Nicki Fisher. These three women and the other Lions are dedicated to the survival and strength of Israel and the Jewish people. Signifying the increasing important role women are playing in the world of philan thropy, the National Women’s Constituency has added a new recognition level for women givers of $75,000 called the Sabra Lion. For additional A Mother’s Journey to the Past Book Review of Motherland: Beyond the Holocaust: A Mother-Daughter Journey to Reclaim the Past. By Fern Schumer Chapman. Penguin Books, 187 pages Reviewed by Sharon Gruby, San Diego Jewish Press Heritage This finalist in the 2000 National Jewish Book Awards should have been a winner. It is beautifully written and is so grip ping that it is hard to put down. I found the book so compelling that I read it in one sitting, because I felt desperate to know -what was going to happen next. In 1938, when Edith Westerfeld’s family recognized the danger to their family, they sent their 12-year-old daughter to America to escape from the Nazis. More than 50 years later, she returned with her daughter, Jour nalist Fern Schumer Chapman, to the German town of her birth. The author’s narrative not only details the visit, it introduces the reader to a woman who could never give her “whole” to her chil dren until she had reconciled with her past. Although she had been able to intellectualize the reason her parents had sent her away, Edith felt abandonment through out her life. For this reason, she could never discuss her homeland and the life and family she had left behind. When she revisited Stockstadt, Edith found a town that seemed very different. Many welcomed her with open arms, but there were others who denied what had occurred in their country and what roles they had played. Learning what had happened to her family and reuniting with some of her friends gave her the motivation to face the past and to look forward to the future. As she realized how strong her parents’ love was, she was able to deal with her loss and to forgive herself and others.
