Super Sunday - Answer tbe Call!
Roni Fishkin, Super Sunday
co-chair.
Super Sunday is coming and we
hope you will answer the call.
According to Roni Fishkin, Super
Sunday co-chair, “Super Sunday
will be a day when we bring all of
the agencies together to work
toward a common goal. We have
asked all of our recipient agencies
to provide at least twelve volun
teers to assist us in making phone
calls.”
On Sunday, April 14 we will be
at the phones all day from 9:00
AM to 9:00 PM. Approximately
1,000 households will be called.
Follow up calls will be made on
Tenific Tuesday and Tremendous
Thursday. “We will close the cam
paign after Super Sunday week,”
said Jill Newman, 2002 Campaign
Chair. “I hope everyone will make
their pledge between now and the
close of the campaign. We want
every household to ‘answer the
call,' thereby, greatly increasing
the number of households making
gifts this year. We are on the home
stretch in our attempt to raise $2.5
million.”
“A Rhode Island philanthropist
donating money to fight hunger in
communities throughout the coun
try is providing us an additional
opportunity to increase our cam
paign,” said Roni Fishkin. “Any
donation made during Super
Sunday week will generate addi
tional dollars from a Challenge
Grant from the Feinstein
Foundation. Therefore, the bigger
our donations, the more money we
can allocate directly to such agen
cies as the JFS Food Bank and
Loaves and Fishes.”
“We are also seeking donations
of gift certificates for lunches, din
ners, and goods and services. We
plan to have hourly drawings to
give our volunteers a boost during
the day. If you are in a position to
donate a gift certificate, please call
the Federation office at 704-944-
6758,” said Elaine Moody, co
chair of Super Sunday. “Also, if
you would like to volunteer,
please let us know - you don’t
have to wait to be asked. We need
people to make phone calls, as
well as volunteers to write thank
you notes, and to record gifts.”
The Jewish Federation of
Greater Charlotte is the umbrella
fundraising agency for the
Charlotte Jewish community.
Through our support of such agen
cies as Jewish Family Services,
the Jewish Community Center,
and the Blumenthal Jewish Home,
we are able to assure that quality
human services are delivered to
Jews in need. Our commitment to

On the 5th month of the Hebrew
month lyar, in the secular year
1948, Israel's first prime minister,
David Ben-Gurion, declared inde
pendence for the Jewish home
land. Every year since, Jews
throughout the world have been
celebrating Yom Ha'atzamut,
Independence Day, for the State of
Israel.
This year recognizing Israel's
independence and the bravery of
our brothers and sisters in the land
of Israel is more poignant than
ever. Now, as they were then,
Israelis are under constant fire and
must bear arms to defend them
selves. Let us take some time on
the Sunday April 21 to say thank
you to God for keeping the State
of Israel and say Mazel Tov to its
citizens for the sacrifices they
have had to make to keep the
dream of a Jewish homeland alive
and thriving.
The day's events will commence
at 11:30 AM with a dedication of
the newly renovated Barbara L.
Levine Indoor Pool at the Jewish
Community Center. Immediately
following the ceremony. Camp
Mindy will come alive as an
Israeli Market complete with food,
an Israel Flag Making Station, an
Israeli Pen Pal area, Yom
Ha'atzmaut crafts honoring Israel,
Bingo and a Maj Jong
Tournament.
At 1:30 the official Yom
Ha’atzmaut Celebration will com
mence with a dedication from the
Israel Consul General, Jacob
Rocen, followed by the First
Annual Walk for Israel. Children
and adults will be asking for
pledges to support the purchase of
an ambulance for our sister city in
Israel, Hadera-Eiron. The Hadera
region has been subjected to more
than 25 terrorists attacks in the last
18 months and a new ambulance is
desperately needed.
The WALK FOR ISRAEL
begins at Camp Mindy and will
proceed down the driveway to
Charlotte Jewish Day School, over
to Temple Israel, out to
Providence Road and down to
Temple Beth El and then wind its
way through Shalom Park. At feach
stop along the route, the Walk will
pick up people, adding to the
excitement of the day. Once all
groups are assembled, they will
proceed to the Soccer Field and
the Walk for Israel will culminate
in a Shalom Park Expansion
Project Groundbreaking ceremony
followed by a dedication ceremo
ny for the new Ostrow Family
Athletic Fields.
The rest of the day, from 3 - 4
PM, will be full of fun: a field day
with relay races, games, family
softball and soccer games, a DJ
and dancing music and snacks.
This community-wide event is
sponsored by: The Foundation of
Shalom Park, The Jewish
Community Center, The Jewish
Federation of Greater Charlotte,
Temple Israel, Temple Beth El,
Charlotte Jewish Day School,
Charlotte Jewish Preschool,
Consolidated High School, BBYO
and Ohr HaTorah.
Don't miss this fun-filled after
noon. Celebrate the birth and life
of Israel. Shehecheyanu!
